EVIDENCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION

EVIDENCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION – The shipyard in Buenavista, Bohol, established by Artemis Marine and Industrial Construction Inc. (AMICI), has been a subject of controversy due to its environmental impact. The construction of the shipyard has led to the destruction of 40 hectares of precious mangrove forests. Senator Raffy Tulfo, in a recent Senate hearing, criticized the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for what he described as a failure to safeguard the nation’s natural resources. He pointed to evidence of negligence and mismanagement, particularly in the issuance of an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) that allowed the shipyard’s construction, despite the clear prohibition of mangrove deforestation under Republic Act 1990.
