MANDATORY CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION (MCLE) DURING THE IBP EASTERN VISAYAS REGIONAL CONVENTION ON 13-14 JUNE 2024
Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Bohol Chapter recently announced that it is hosting the IBP Eastern Visayas Regional Convention on 13-14 June 2024 at Modala Resort, Panglao, Bohol. The last time Bohol hosted this biennial gathering of lawyers was in 2009. With a theme “One Region, One Vision: Elevating the Legal Profession in the Eastern Visayas Region by Adapting to Legal Trends and Judicial Innovations”, the invited Keynote Speaker and Guest of Honor is no less than the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Hon. Alexander G. Gesmundo, who is expected to discuss the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027 (SPJI).
On the first day, Atty. Raoul C. Creencia, Former Government Corporate Counsel, will be the opening lecturer from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. with his topic “Salient Features of Republic Act No. 11966 or the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Code of the Philippines and its Implementing Rules and Regulations” under the subject Updates on Substantive and Procedural Laws and Jurisprudence. It will be followed with the Opening Ceremony with Chief Justice Gesmundo and his lecture on SPJI will be credited for 1 MCLE unit under MCLE-prescribed subject.
In the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Dean Cecilio D. Duka, Associate Dean of the University of Makati College of Law will discuss the topic “Lawyering in the Advent of the CPRA” under the subject Legal Ethics. Atty. Jerome D. Canlas, Partner of Cruz Marcelo & Tenefrancia Law Offices, will discuss the topic “Data Privacy Act of 2012: Compliance and Enforcement” to be credited under the subject Updates on Substantive and Procedural Laws and Jurisprudence. Private practitioner Atty. Maria Theresa B. Ramos will discuss “Technology and the Law” from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. under MCLE-prescribed subject. To end the first day, there will be a Welcome Dinner wherein winners of the IBP Eastern Visayas Regional Tournament will be announced and awarded and Mr. and Ms. IBP Eastern Visayas will be chosen.
On the second day, the Keynote Speaker and Opening Lecturer is Retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio who will discuss a timely topic “Philippine Island Territories in the West Philippine Sea” to be credited for two (2) MCLE units under International Law and Convention. It will be followed by a lecture on “New Rules on Evidence as Applied in Criminal Cases” from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon under the subject Trial and Pre-Trial Skills to be delivered by Regional Trial Court Judge Gener M. Gito, PHILJA Lecturer.
In the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Atty. Aliakhbar A. Jumrani, Professor of Law, Bar Reviewer and MCLE Lecturer, will discuss on “The Special ADR Rules (A.M. No. 07-11-08-SC)” to be credited under the subject Alternative Dispute Resolution. Justice Emily L. San Gaspar-Gito of the Court of Appeals will then discuss “Jurisprudential Trends in Family Law Cases” under the subject Updates in Substantive and Procedural Laws and Jurisprudence from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The lectures of the Convention will end with a topic under the subject Legal Writing and Oral Advocacy with a topic “Practical Tips to Ethical Legal Writing” to be delivered by Atty. Edwin M. Carillo, Professor of Law and Bar Examiner. The Convention will end with a Fellowship Dinner with Atty. Edward Chico doing an Intermission Number dubbed as Legally Funny Hour.
