LEADERSHIP 101

A good leader follows.
A good leader obeys.
A good leader serves.
A good leader listens.

Contrary to a mindset of entitlement , a good leader exhibits the aforementioned traits to effectively carry out his responsibilities to govern. Good governance is managing all available resources to achieve the greater good and is the end result of competent managerial skills.

A good leader follows. – To be effective a leader must also be a follower. He must follow the rules and adhere to the laws of the land. He must learn to follow orders but exercise good judgment in implementing them.

A good leader obeys.-  He obeys the law and the moral principles that pave the way for a meaningful and purposeful life. He is not above the law but is one with his people in upholding it. He does not circumvent it.

A good leader serves.- Service is the hallmark of excellent leadership. To  lead one must serve the people he is tasked to
govern. He must be sensitive to the plight of his people and their needs. He must be a “public servant” not a king.

A good leader listens.-  A good leader listens to those above and below him.He is not averse to criticism but embraces contrary opinions constructively. This way he avoids being dictatorial and develops open mindedness.

As mentioned above, we have tried to define the basics of good leadership. With the problems we are currently facing, our leaders must have  these skills to address them and effectively govern.

For what we need are true and dedicated leaders and managers not politicians. Our problems won’t go away by mere rhetoric and posturing. We need men of action and competence. We need men who don’t avoid responsibility but face them.

So when we put clowns to lead us, expect a circus. Our lives are not made easier by mere entertainment and laughter. We need firm decision-making in governance. We need good governance not ” propaganda governance ” .

Yet we must realize that it s not a game of trial and error but a serious business of managing the affairs of society that impact our lives. This is our challenge and an even greater challenge is finding leaders who are up to the task.

Are we ready?
