University students clinch Top Prize in 6th Himo’g Huni
In a thrilling finale to the Himo’g Huni Ika-Unom nga Hugna original songwriting competition, cousins Janwel Ladaga and Ermar Vince Ladaga’s composition, “Abi Pa Lang”, emerged as the grand champion on April 29, 2024 at the Activity Center, Island City Mall.
The 21-year-old college students from Bohol Island State University captivated the audience with their heartfelt composition. Their song tells the story of a boy whose love goes unnoticed by the girl he adores, despite his firm belief in their destined connection.
The catchy tune of “Abi Pa Lang” earned it the distinction of Best in Melody, while Sam Josephus Biliran’s interpretation of the song garnered him the title of Best Interpreter.
Remarkably, this isn’t the first time the Ladaga cousins have shone in the limelight of Himo’g Huni. In last year’s competition, their upbeat song “Sayaw Inday” secured them the second runner-up spot, showcasing their versatility and talent as songwriters.
Taking the first runner-up position was Medelito Matedios Baculpo with his moving composition “Magauban,” interpreted by Zen and Ma Bel. Baculpo’s song delves into themes of love, resilience, and hope, offering a message of strength in the face of adversity.
Meanwhile, the second runner-up spot was claimed by rap duo Ammah Blessed Orgino and Jonathan Mari Billan, creators of the song “Oh One.” Their rap piece also earned recognition for its exceptional lyrics, clinching the coveted Best Lyricism award.
The composition “Ali sa Bohol” by Geode Ann Cacho, Jessyl Padas and Tex Hipolitus Padas received the Social Media Award, further highlighting the depth of talents among Bohol’s aspiring songwriters.
Among the finalists were “Heart of the Islands” by Nikko Surem Aldion, “Suliran” by Jannzen Humol, “Gugmahan (Gugma sa Amahan)” by Daniel Job Bustos, “St. Tao” by Christian Luige Ortega, “Huy Miga” by Robert Miguel Bradshaw, and “AKW (Ako Kaha When)” by John Erscel Galagar.
Crowd-drawing performances by last year’s Himo’g Huni Champion Anne Duaban, Joseph Gara and his band, and Dan Lagroma added to the event’s allure.
Mutya sa Tagbilaran 2024 Mary Love Lopez, representing City Mayor Jane Yap, delivered an inspirational message and led the awarding of winners.
Additionally, the official video of “Uli,” an original composition by Mr. Joseph Gara, was launched during the event, adding to the celebration of local talent and creativity.
The esteemed panel of judges for this year’s Himo’g Huni included renowned song composers Jewel Villaflores, Ferdinand Aragon, and Geovani Ingking Omus. Their expertise and discernment added prestige to the competition, ensuring that the finest compositions received recognition.
The 6th edition of Himo’g Huni was organized by local songwriter singer Joseph Gara in partnership with the City Government of Tagbilaran through the Tagbilaran City Events, Culture, and Arts Office.
The competition not only showcased the talents of local young musicians but also served as a platform to express creativity and share meaningful messages through music.
Contestants of the 6th Himo’g Huni Competition beam with joy as they strike a pose during the awarding ceremony held on April 29, 2024, at the Island City Mall Activity Center. This highly awaited competition is just one of the exciting events lined up for the 2024 Saulog Festival.
