PERTUSSIS

(Part 4)

The Bohol Tribune (TBT):  Dr. Bryan, I would like to ask again. Is Pertussis associated with pneumonia?

Dr. Bryan Cepedoza:  Like what I said, there are those who are sufferin from Pertussis and will get pneumonia (lung infection). There are others who will have apnea, and convulsions

The Bohol Tribune (TBT):  Is Pertussis a type of bronchitis?

Dr. Bryan Cepedoza:  We have to remember and understand that most cases of bronchitis are caused by a viral infection of the upper airways, such as the common cold or the flu. But it is less common that a bacterium called Bordetella pertussis, which causes pertussis (whooping cough), is the cause

The Bohol Tribune (TBT):  Could pertussis be damaging to the lungs, Dr. Bryan?

Dr. Bryan Cepedoza:  Well, we have to realize that if the symptoms will progress, complications may happen. This is most especially true in very young children where there is a possibility for them to develop pneumonia, heart failure, collapsed lung, brain bleeding and even death.

The Bohol Tribune (TBT):  Is pertussis asthma, Dr. Bryan?

Dr. Bryan Cepedoza:  There could be moments when Pertussis might be misdiagnosed as asthma. This is both pertussis and asthma have conditions with chronic coughing. The mistake will happen if the person does not present characteristic, “whooping” sound when coughing.

The Bohol Tribune (TBT):  Is there a way, Dr. Bryan, to treat pertussis naturally?

Dr. Bryan Cepedoza:  Try using a clean, cool mist humidifier. This will help loosen mucus and soothe the cough. Then you should wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Remember also to eat small meals every few hours. This is to help prevent vomiting. You have to get plenty of fluids, including water, juices, and soups, and fruits to prevent dehydration.
