This edition of VOX POPULI is featuring the netizens’ reactions, responses and comments to the statement posted on the FB page of the Managing Editor of The Bohol Tribune related to the “You are rich?” and “You arranged?” issue posted recently on social media. The exact post on the FB page of the Managing Editor of The Bohol Tribune was this:
“Naay gustong mo korek nga ang subtitle kuno sa post sa foreigner ang sayop. Dili kuno kadto “You are rich?” pero “You arranged?”. . . Moingon na pod sila nga dili ta kahibaw mo PRONOUNCE kay galibog na man ta ug unsa gyud ang gisulti . . . Pero ma “You are rich?” man kadto or “You arranged?”, UNSA MAN GYUD ANG TINOOD NGA ISYU? DI BA ANG ISYU MAO MAN ANG TAG-AS MAN NGA PLETEHAN? Aw galing pud ug barato ra ninyo ang P500 or P600 or P700 gikan sa airport ngadto sa hotel nga nahisgutan. (Somebody wants to correct the subtitle of the foreigner’s post on social media. It wasn’t supposed to be “You are rich?” but “You arranged?”. . . If this is the case, they will then say that we don’t know how to PRONOUNCE because, now, we are confused about what was said. . . But whether it was “You are rich?” or “You arranged?” we wish to ask: WHAT IS THE REAL ISSUE IN THIS SITUATION? IS THE ISSUE NOT ABOUT THE HIGH TRANSPORTATION FEE? Or maybe, for you, it is not high if we pay P500 or P600 or P700 from the airport to the hotel mentioned.)

∙ from John Araneta: I tried to watch the video using my headphones to hear the convo clearly. Based on what I heard and also based on context, I think what the girl said was “you arrange?” and Travis answered “no.” Unfortunately this was subtitled by the vlogger himself. I can’t blame him, though. Travis is Australian and he has difficulty getting a grasp of Filipino accent (been following Travis for almost 2 years). Indeed the issue here should be the rates. I paid 700 too for transpo from Panglao airport to Dumaluan Resort 6 months ago on my rather recent visit. This should be addressed by Tourism.

Ang P 500 – P 600 kuno nga mga presyo are for 5-seater to 7-seater cars with aircon.
Ang P 200 – P 300 kuno nga mga presyo are for 3-seater TriCabs with open air.
So kung atong kwentahon og per person nga pletehan, murag mahog og ingon ani ang presyo:
Van 14-seater: P 700 / 14 persons = P 50 a person; Car 5-seater: P 500 / 5 persons = P 100 a person; TriCab 3-seater: P 200 / 3 persons = P 67 a person. Sa ato pa, it would turn out kuno nga affordable ra, ug reasonable pud, ug mas barato pa diay hinuon ang charge sa van kung in terms of per person nga singil kung ikumpara sa singil sa mga cars ug mga TriCabs. Well, murag sounds logical man tuod pud ang iyahang pagpasabot. Pero galing lang ang dako nga silbing nakapahimong dili pabor sa mga sumasakay mao kini: Kung pananglit nag-inusara ra ka nga turista (wala kay kauban), unya ikaw ra usa magpahatud sa imong adtuan, di man pwede nga per person nga pletehan ang imo rang bayaran kay syempre maalkanse man pud sila sa byahe. Pero sa kantidad nga P 500 nga gihatag ni Travis ngadto sa tricab driver, he could have taken the P 500 fare offer nga gibungat unta sa taxi driver, pero ngano kahang iyaha ra mang gibalibaran? Aircon taxi is comfortable than tricab!
Travis is a well-followed online vlogger and he has many travel experiences. So sa akong opinion, his video is no accident nor anecdotal. As an expert vlogger and traveler as he is, sa style sa iyang pag-video, maila nga sweto na siya kaayo kung unsay angay nga himuag video (kung ikaw nag-tour or nag-travel) nga potential mag-viral. The whole point of his airport arrival video was to highlight the arrival experience accented with details of interactions with different people at the airport. He knew exactly what he did. With his experiences, he simply followed a tried and tested script in his mind — who to interact with, the level of tactfulness/politeness, some sense of humor, and then ending everything with good vibes of generosity.
