What is MDR-TB?
(Part 4)
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): We are still in our discussion of MDR TB, Dr. Bryan. And last time, we parted with my question of the types of food that re good for patients with MDR TB. You said that people who are taking TB medication should avoid alcohol intake as it can interfere with the treatment by reacting with medicines. You also said that they should also restrict coffee and caffeinated drinks to a minimum and increase intake of fluids like water and coconut water. You added that they should also avoid deep-fried food, junk food, and refined products, like sugar, flour, etc.
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: Yes, and we have to remember that there is a good exercise for people who are sick of TB
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): And what is that, Dr. Bryan?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: Some of these include: stationary cycling, resistance training and light jogging. These are great ways to make sure that the TB infection that was once in your system has been completely eradicated. Once recovered, it is a good idea to keep up the exercise, as this is a factor in stopping the TB from returning at a later date.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): How about the drink of an MDR TB patient?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: We have some foods like turmeric, garlic, ginger and green tea. These have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties that can aid in the management of TB. Turmeric contains curcumin, which has been found to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): How about eggs? Are eggs good for people who have TB?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: “Malnourished people are at increased risk of developing tuberculosis and take a prolonged time to recover,” Dr Khalane said. He added that because of this, daily consumption of milk, milk products, eggs, meat, and fish is beneficial
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): What precautions are to be taken for MDR TB patients?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: Please remember that patients on preventive therapy should be monitored carefully for adverse reactions to the medications, evidence of active TB, and adherence to therapy. Patients should be thoroughly educated about symptoms of TB and the need for immediate medical evaluation if symptoms do occur.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): What are some of the strategies to prevent MDR TB?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: In order to prevent MDR TB there are some ways to follow: Early detection and high quality treatment of drug-susceptible TB; Early detection and high quality treatment of drug-resistant TB.; Effective implementation of infection control measures; Strengthening and regulation of health systems.
