NWRB junks protest vs Balilihan water rights

The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) has rejected a protest filed by a local resident against the water permit applications of the Balilihan local government unit, citing a lack of substantial evidence to support the claims.

In a five-page ruling, NWRB said that complainant Gregorio Enrique Madanguit failed to provide evidence that the water permit applications would harm the environment.

The board also noted that the granting of water rights undergoes a thorough evaluation and assessment process.

NWRB also dismissed Madanguit’s claims that the local government had entered into a disadvantageous contract, saying that this issue was outside the board’s jurisdiction.

The ruling clears the way for the Balilihan local government to proceed with its water permit applications for groundwater appropriation in two barangays, subject to compliance with the board’s requirements.

NWRB pointed out that the decision to grant the water permit would depend on a final evaluation of other relevant factors, including water availability and beneficial use, in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
