Boholano Doctor Bags Most Outstanding Doctors to the Barrios Award

Dr. Reina Juno Uy Sumatra is among the five physicians who recently received the Most Outstanding Doctors to the Barrios (DTTB) Award from the Department of Health (DOH) in November 7, 2024 during  theirExit Conference in Davao City.There are currently 148 DTTBs of Batch 39, known as Sinagtala, in the whole Philippines.

The Most Outstanding DTTB Award acknowledges and celebrates the exceptional commitment, sacrifice, and service of the Rural Health Physicians (RHPs) who serve in the unserved and underserved communities in the country. Since it was established in 1993, the DTTB Program was designed to address the unequal distribution of physicians across the Philippines, particularly in underserved and Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), many of which had been without a doctor for over a decade. 

A Journey of Excellence and Commitment to Equitable Healthcare 

Dr. Sumatragot her medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine (UPCM) at UP Manila. She is a product of the INTARMED (Integrated Liberal Arts and Medicine) program, a prestigious seven-year accelerated medical program offered by UPCM.After passing the Physician Licensure Examination in November 2021, she was deployed by the DOH to the Municipality of Samboan in Cebu province as a Municipal Health Officer – Officer In-Charge in February 2022. Upon her request, the DOH approved her transfer to her home province where she was assigned in Danao, Bohol as Rural Health Physician and designated as Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) in February 2023.

Serving with Passion for Public Service

Simultaneously serving as DTTBs, Dr. Sumatra is also enrolled in the Master in Public Management major in Health Governance degree at the Ateneo de Manila School of Governance through online classes and a monthly one-week face-to-face class.

Dr. Sumatra is a member of the Technical and Policy Committee of the Philippine Society of Public Health Physicians (PSPHP) where she participates in technical meetings to review proposed amendments of a national law and peer reviews articles submitted to the Asian Journal of Public Health Practice (AJPHP). She is also a member of the Association of Municipal Health Officers of the Philippines (AMHOP).

Exceptional Accomplishments for Transformative Impact

Among the innovative programs and projects implemented by DTTB Reina Juno Sumatra in 2022-2024that earned her the Best DTTB Award are the following:

On Health Governance
