∙         from Boyet Dompor: Hello ma’am Ardy. I may add that the situation is very typical to a tourist destination due to so-called tourism gentrification; where the demands for goods and services are so steep compared to the supply. This is exacerbated by the duopoly of merchants who control the prices and flow of goods.

There is not much that the government can do on the demand side; however the supply side can be abetted by encouraging competition. In the long run, the government can incentivize the farmers and fishermen in different ways; among them price and technology support.

In a tourism gentrification, the locals suffer not only to es alarming cost of living but also of cultural and social displacement. I am equally disappointed by the state that we are in. Best Ma’am Ardy

∙         from Judith Uy Sumatra: To cope with the high cost of living, the government must consider the following strategies: –Skill Enhancement and Education: Investing in education and vocational training can open doors to higher-paying jobs within the tourism sector or other industries. Local institutions and government programs often offer affordable courses tailored to in-demand skills.

-Community-Based Tourism Initiatives: Engaging in community-led tourism projects allows residents to benefit directly from the industry. Such initiatives can provide sustainable income while preserving local culture and resources; Collective Bargaining and Advocacy: Joining or forming labor unions can empower workers to negotiate for better wages and working conditions. Collective action can influence policies that address the economic disparities caused by tourism development; Financial Literacy and Budgeting: Enhancing financial management skills helps in making informed decisions about spending, saving, and investing. Local NGOs and community centers often provide workshops on budgeting and financial planning; Accessing Government Support Programs: Explore available government assistance programs aimed at supporting low-income households. These may include subsidies for housing, healthcare, or education, designed to alleviate the financial burden; Participating in Cooperative Enterprises: Joining cooperatives can reduce costs through shared resources and collective purchasing power. Cooperatives in agriculture, retail, or services can provide more affordable goods and services to members; Advocating for Policy Changes: Engage with local government units to advocate for policies that mitigate the adverse effects of tourism gentrification, such as affordable housing initiatives and fair wage laws; By proactively adopting these strategies, low-wage earners in Bohol can better cope with the rising cost of living associated with tourism-driven economic changes.
