Unity:  What have you become?

The Filipino people deserve more than a pittance called ayuda amid the current political zarzuela.

President Marcos Jr. and his allies, aided by belligerent Vice President Sara Duterte, must be reminded that they rose to power with unity as their campaign promise. The Uniteam never clearly defined unity during the campaign, but close to 32 million Filipinos pinned their hopes on this promise when they voted for Marcos Jr. and Duterte.

While the President’s allies in the House of Representatives are staging apolitical circus allegedly in the name of accountability and good governance, the Marcos administration has unwittingly revealed that it intended to deliver nothing on its campaign promise of unity.

This feud, which has escalated to public threats and accusations, is testing the resilience of the country’s democratic institutions. The rift between these two leaders has exposed deep-seated differences in their political agendas and personal ambitions.

VP Sara’s incendiary remarks and public threat to have Marcos and his close allies assassinated if she were to be attacked may have shocked the nation and raised serious concerns about the stability and integrity of the government. But this is more of a political strategy than a threat, intended to test which of the warring factions of the Uniteam have the support of Filipino people.

The Marcos-Duterte rift highlights the fragility of political alliances and the potential for personal vendettas to disrupt governance. As the country watches this power struggle unfold, the focus must remain on ensuring the democratic process and the rule of law prevail. The Philippines cannot afford to let political infighting undermine its progress and stability.

Regardless of who emerges victorious in this political conflict, let our leaders who promised unity prioritize the nation’s welfare over personal and political rivalries. The future of the Philippines depends on their ability to navigate these turbulent times with wisdom and integrity.

Sadly, halfway through the Marcos-Duterte administration’s term, failure to deliver on the promise of unity has become imminent.
