Bohol electric coops deny receiving mayors’ petition on BLCI’s franchise expansion

Top officials of Bohol’s two electric cooperatives have said they have not received any formal communication regarding a controversial petition by some Bohol mayors to expand Bohol Light”s franchise area beyond Tagbilaran City.

General managers Dino Nicolas Roxas and Eugene Tan of Bohol Electric Cooperative (BOHECO) 1 and 2 respectively told Bohol media they are prepared to address issues “point by point” once they receive an official copy of the petition.

The statement comes amid growing tension over power services in Bohol province, sparked by complaints of frequent brownouts, low voltage issues, and allegedly high electricity rates in areas served by the cooperatives.

The controversy escalated when Buenavista Mayor Dave Duallo sought Governor Aris Aumentado’s intervention, leading to a petition from the League of Municipalities of the Philippines – Bohol Chapter requesting lawmakers to expand Bohol Light Company’s franchise beyond its current coverage in Tagbilaran City.

BOHECO 2’s Tan disputed claims of widespread customer dissatisfaction, saying an immediate investigation with punong barangays revealed no substantial complaints.

He added there had been no further communication from Mayor Duallo after their initial inquiry.

Notably, 17 mayors, including those from key municipalities like Albur, Baclayon, and Ubay, did not sign the petition.

Both cooperatives expressed readiness to participate in dialogue with the Provincial Board regarding the alleged complaints.

From its central office, the company can track data such as voltage and current, identify problems, and make adjustments as needed.

The implementation of the SCADA system has streamlined BOHECO I’s operations, reducing the need for on-site personnel at substations, lowering operational costs, and maintaining a high level of service reliability.

In the event of a power interruption, the SCADA system enables BOHECO I to quickly identify the problem and restore power within two minutes.

The use of SCADA technology also allows BOHECO I to detect problems on primary lines or substations, minimizing power interruptions.

By monitoring power loads, the company can prevent congestion and ensure a stable supply of electricity to homes, offices, and other establishments.

In cases of natural disasters, the SCADA system enables BOHECO I to quickly identify the problem, isolate the damaged section, and reroute power to unaffected areas, thereby minimizing electrical hazards.
