Mayor Ian Gil Mendez of San Miguel town has sharply criticized the delay in the release of housing aid intended for victims of Typhoon Odette, which devastated the province in December 2021.
During a radio interview with Ardy Araneta-Batoy on DYTR’s “Newsmakers ug Uban Pa,” Mendez pointed out that while other financial grants for his town have been accounted for, the aid from the National Housing Authority (NHA) has not been forthcoming. This aid was meant to assist residents whose homes were destroyed by the typhoon.
Mendez expressed frustration over the lack of progress despite the town meeting all NHA requirements.
He speculated that the delay might be due to internal processes at the NHA, noting that funds are not being downloaded directly to local government units like his.
The mayor called for authorities to expedite the distribution, pointing out the suffering of those still without proper housing due to the delay.
He noted that the initiative for this aid started under the previous administration, but with the current one halfway through its term, the funds have yet to be released.
Mendez clarified that the local government has played no role in the distribution of these funds, which fall under the NHA’s purview.
He noted that unlike the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the NHA’s distribution mechanisms might involve additional layers of bureaucracy that are causing the delay.
With local elections approaching, Mendez addressed concerns that this issue might be used against him in his re-election campaign against Vice Mayor Lito Bulaga.
He stressed his efforts to advocate for his constituents, hoping his persistence would lead to the funds reaching those in need.
The NHA, established to provide housing solutions across the country, has been under scrutiny for its efficiency in aid distribution following natural disasters.
Typhoon Odette, known internationally as Rai, was one of the most powerful storms to hit the Philippines, causing widespread destruction across several islands, including Bohol, where it left many residents homeless.
Mayor Mendez said he is committed to continuing his coordination with NHA representatives to resolve these issues, ensuring the aid reaches typhoon victims as soon as possible.
