‘Barug Bohol’ radio program gains popularity for gov’t watchdog role

The independent radio program “Barug Bohol” is experiencing a surge in popularity among thousands of Boholanos for its unflinching coverage of alleged government irregularities, according to Bohol media observers.

Broadcasting twice daily on weekdays over 911 DYTR FM and Radio Jagna, the program has carved out a niche as a government watchdog, focusing on transparency issues in both provincial and city administrations.

“Barug Bohol,” which translates to “Stand Up Bohol” in Cebuano, is independently produced and hosted by former Tagbilaran City Mayor Atty. Dan Lim and former Poblacion, Tagbilaran Barangay Captain Arlene Karaan.

The program airs Monday from 11 a.m. to noon, and Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Sources familiar with the program’s development say it was created from Lim’s determination to bring government activities into public view, particularly focusing on allegations of corruption and administrative irregularities.

“The program’s straightforward approach to discussing Bohol governance issues has resonated with listeners across the province,” said a columnist and analyst who requested anonymity to speak freely about the program’s impact.

Listeners cite the hosts’ backgrounds in public service as lending credibility to their commentary.

As former public officials themselves, Lim and Karaan bring insider perspectives to their analysis of government operations.

Neither DYTR station management nor provincial government officials responded to requests for comment about the program’s content or growing influence.

The program continues to expand its audience base as it approaches its first anniversary of broadcasting.
