Public urged to stay alert as Bohol heat index hits dangerous levels

Residents are urged to take precautions as the heat index in Bohol reached dangerous levels this week, according to local disaster officials.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (PDRRMO) Anthony Damalerio warned the public to stay vigilant amid the soaring temperatures.

On Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded a heat index of 44 degrees Celsius in Bohol, particularly affecting areas like Panglao and Tagbilaran City.

Damalerio, in an interview with DYTR News, advised the public to avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the heat is most intense.

He noted the importance of staying hydrated, seeking shade or cooler areas, limiting outdoor movements during peak hours, wearing loose-fitting clothing, and using protective gear such as hats or umbrellas.

He also urged residents to familiarize themselves with the symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps and heat stroke for early detection and immediate treatment.

The PDRRMO, alongside Tarsier 117 and municipal disaster risk offices (MDRRMOs), has intensified public information campaigns to safeguard communities against the health risks posed by the extreme heat.

PAGASA clarified that the current high temperatures are typical during the Philippine dry season.

The weather bureau lifted the La Niña alert earlier this month and noted that there is only a small chance of an El Niño phenomenon developing this year.

Although the country is under normal weather conditions, experts suggest that global warming could be contributing to the elevated temperatures.
