5 charged in fatal boat collision off Malingin Island

Authorities filed criminal charges on May 9, 2025, against five individuals linked to a deadly boat collision that killed two fishermen in the waters off Malingin Island, Bien Unido, Bohol, on May 2, 2025, the Bohol Police Provincial Office (BPPO) announced.

The incident occurred in the early morning when a triple-engine motorboat, painted red, struck an apple-green, single-engine motorboat carrying the victims, both residents of Malingin Island.

The red motorboat fled toward Carlos P. Garcia town, police said.

Following an intensive investigation, the Bien Unido Police Station identified the suspects.

Evidence gathered supported the filing of charges to ensure justice for the victims and their families, BPPO said.

Provincial PNP Director Col. Arnel Banzon vowed a thorough and swift investigation, directing all units to pursue legal processes diligently.

“The Bohol Police will not tolerate injustice,” said BPPO spokesperson Lt. Col. Norman Nuez. “We are committed to enforcing the law through all legal means.”

The collision triggered old issues about maritime safety in Bohol’s coastal waters, where small fishing vessels often navigate alongside faster, larger boats.

Police authorities have urged stricter compliance with boating regulations to prevent similar incidents.

BPPO encouraged the public to rely on official statements and report crimes promptly to support law enforcement efforts.
