From the Outside Looking In

BY:DONALD SEVILLA

What Hypocrites We Are

Imagine living off, say a minimum daily wage of Php 550 and having to feed a family of three.

Rice costs no less than Php 40  a kilo, fish at an average of  250/ kilo and meat/pork at Php350-400. Throw in a few vegetables and spices which cost ridiculously expensive and voila you are outrageously off-budget.

With this deficit spending can you eat comfortably three square meals a day? Raise a family? Add your utility bills, rent and other incidentals and you have a complete recipe for disaster.

No wonder people turn to “other things” just to get by. Without a side hustle how can one survive?

Call it resilience, luck or whatever, it baffles the logical mind how our people have survived like this.

Compare the salàries of our politicians and public servants who do not work as much as they are expected to, yet earn in a single term more than most people do in a lifetime.

Is life fair? Our leaders keep exhorting our people to tighten their belts and brace for difficult times  while they indulge in their obscene luxuries and travels abroad!

Is life fair?  While the lowly farmer grapples with the reality of having to sell his palay at 16/ kilo toiling laboriously under the heat of the sun, hands muddied and dirty, our politicians sitting comfortably in their airconditioned offices by just a stroke of their pen earn hefty commissions from government contracts.

What gives these greedy people more right to a better life than all of us?

Our people have been kept in the dark far too long that we need to climb out of our shithole and see things for what they are.

Were it not for corruption  and greed ,opportunities in this country could have been dispersed more evenly and everyone could have their  fair share of the pie.

But no, those on top cannot simply allow the scales to tilt away from them. The rich have become richer and the poor, poorer.

Isn’t this what we are experiencing now with the kind of politics and governance that we have?

Is life fair? Woe unto us hypocrites! What Hypocrites We Are
