Bohol logs 1,205 dengue cases as PH battles nationwide outbreak

The province of Bohol recorded 1,205 dengue cases and two deaths in the first five months of 2025, health authorities said, reflecting a national trend of rising mosquito-borne infections across the country.

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported the figures for the January-May period represented a 52.5 percent decrease from the same timeframe in 2024, when the province logged 2,539 cases and eight fatalities, according to data from the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit.

Despite the decline in Bohol, the Philippines nationally has seen dengue cases surge by over 75 percent in early 2025 compared to the previous year, prompting health officials to warn of a potential major outbreak.

The coastal municipality of Talibon recorded the highest number of cases in Bohol with 164 infections, followed by the provincial capital Tagbilaran with 101 cases.

Other heavily affected areas included Ubay (82 cases), Inabanga (44 cases), and Valencia (44 cases).

The two fatalities occurred in Tagbilaran and Calape municipality, health officials said.

Provincial health authorities urged residents to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, use protective measures against bites, seek immediate medical attention when symptoms appear, and support community fogging operations.

Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, causes high fever, severe headaches, and joint pain.

In severe cases, it can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which can be fatal without proper medical care.

The Philippines routinely ranks among the world’s most dengue-affected countries, with the tropical climate and dense urban populations creating ideal conditions for the disease-carrying mosquitoes to breed.

Globally, over three million dengue cases and 1,400 deaths have been reported from 90 countries since the beginning of 2025, according to World Health Organization data.
