Attention Deficit Disorder

Attention deficit disorder or ADD is the term used when the central nervous system (CNS) is injured in a diffuse manner.
This injury to the CNS may result in a learning disability, hyperactivity, and poor coordination.
Attention deficit disorder or ADD may refer to a child with normal or near-normal intelligence with learning and behavioral disabilities.
These disabilities may range from mild to severe and are associated with deviations of functions of the nervous system.

The ADD has three components:

1.Learning disability

2.Behavioral difficulties

3.Motor disabilities

Among the three components, learning disability is the most serious symptom and may frequently present as dyslexia.
Dyslexia, as we have known, is a severe reading disability in recognizing printed words.
Perceptual disabilities may be manifested by letter reversals and mirror writing beyond that expected for age.
These difficulties are discovered by school teachers and are found in 3–5% of all school children.

Hyperactivity is the most common presenting symptom in children with behavioral difficulties.
The child has the inability to maintain attention for a period of time.

Motor disabilities may manifest the following:

1.Incoordination

2.Poor fine motor disabilities

3.Choreiform activity

4.Overflow of rapid alternating movements

5.Discrepancies of minor reflexes
