Common Health Related Problems in Adolescence

Our textbook in Pediatrics by Dr Fe Del Mundo described Adolescence as the special period of life characterized by rapid growth and sexual maturation accompanied by mental and psychosocial changes associated with an increased awareness of one’s individuality. Thus, as a child, he should be carefully prepared for adolescence, meeting his needs to ensure his healthy adulthood.

In the clinic, the common health related problems that we see in adolescence are the following:
1. Eating disorders
2. Accidents
3. Smoking and Vaping
4. Drugs and alcohol abuse
5. Sexuality and
6. Mental and Adaptation difficulties

Adolescence is a period of rapid growth and development so they should be monitored if they are taking the proper nutritional requirements with adequate physical activity to avoid obesity. Also, adolescence should also be carefully assessed for eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia.

They should be mentored well so as to avoid impulsive risk- taking behavior. Now, there is an increasing incidence of motor vehicular accidents involving adolescence.

Adolescence is the most favorable time for the formation of smoking habits. Maybe because of peer pressures, or maybe related to social class and to parental smoking habits.

Today, we see an increasing number of young people who are using vapes. It was reported that smoking occurs frequently among those whose life objectives are low and those students who do not perform well at school. Adolescents also use smoking or vaping as a symbol of independence and or rebellion against family or group standards.

In drugs and alcohol abuse, curiosity is the main reason for the initial use of these substances. Other factors may include peer pressure and family influence. In my actual practice, I have not yet encountered any of my patients with this kind of problem.

We will discuss in detail, the mental and adaptation difficulties and sexuality in the next issue.
