Tagbilaran Diocese elects interim bishop during vacancy

The College of Consultors for the Diocese of Tagbilaran elected the Rev. Gerardo “Jingboy” Fortich Saco Jr. as diocesan administrator to lead the diocese while it awaits appointment of a new bishop, the diocese announced Saturday.

Former Tagbilaran Bishop Abet Uy has assumed his new role as head of the Diocese of Cebu.

The 12-member college, composed of priests from the local presbyterate, convened to select interim leadership during the sede vacante — the period when a diocese has no bishop.

Saco previously served as vicar general, the second-highest administrative position in the diocese. He also chairs the Commission on Social Action and serves as priest-in-charge of St. Vincent Ferrer Mission Station in Barangay Cabawan, Tagbilaran City.

Under Catholic canon law, a diocesan administrator holds limited authority compared to a bishop and serves until the pope appoints a permanent successor.

Saco will make a profession of faith before assuming his duties, according to the announcement.

The diocese plans to celebrate special Masses asking for papal guidance in selecting a new bishop.

The Diocese of Tagbilaran, established in 1986, serves the Catholic population of Bohol.
