Influenza
Influenza is an infection caused by influenza virus types A and B and its complications. The mode of transmission is person to person via respiratory droplets from an infected person, or aerosol transmission of small droplets or via exposure through fomites.
The influenza season in the Philippines is from June to November. In the Northern hemisphere it begins as early as October and will last as late as April or May. In the Southern hemisphere, it usually occurs during April to September.
To be protected against influenza virus, everybody should receive the influenza vaccine yearly. So, when is the best time to give the flu vaccine? Annual flu vaccine should be given preferably between February and June before the peak of the influenza season in June and August. However, this can be given throughout the year since flu is common all year round.
Who are the priority groups to receive the flu vaccine?
– children 6months to 5 years of age
– persons with chronic pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, neurologic, hematologic or metabolic disorders
– persons who are immnosuppressed
– women who are or will be pregnant during the flu season
– children 6mos to 18 years of age and receiving long term aspirin therapy
– household contacts and caregivers of children younger than 5 years of age
– household contacts and caregivers of persons with medical conditions
Why is it important to be vaccinated against flu every year?
1. The body’s immune response from vaccination declines over time so annual vaccine is needed for optimal protection.
2. Flu viruses are constantly changing so the flu vaccine formulation is reviewed each year and updated to keep up with changing flu viruses.
