Filipino scientists revive nuclear research program after 25-year shutdown

The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) has successfully restarted its subcritical nuclear research reactor in 2023, marking the revival of a program that had been dormant for over two decades.

The facility at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus operated a nuclear reactor from 1963 to 1988 before entering shutdown mode in 1998.

The newly operational reactor uses uranium fuel and was developed domestically.

“Filipino scientists are ready to lead the way toward a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable energy future,” said Cong. Atty. Art Yap of the Murang Kuryente Party-list, who visited the facility.

Yap pushed the need for investment in Philippine-made technology to advance the country’s energy independence and development goals.
