From the Outside Looking In

BY: DONALD SEVILLA

A LOSS OF CONFIDENCE

The scale and magnitude of the corruption being talked about in the Senate hearings are unprecedented. Billions of pesos in cash changing hands, not just in suitcases but in armored vans!

This has cast our government in a bad light and shook our faith in many of the institutions we used to trust and respect.

Yet our public servants should lead by example and live modestly not ostentatiously. This is embodied in the Code of Ethics of Public Officials and the Anti-graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

The SALN was created for this purpose. But how many of our public officials live modestly?

Before assuming office  their lives were as ordinary as ours but after being elected or appointed as the case may be, things changed.

They now live a life of entitlement and privilege!

With the way things have gone today, our people should start reclaiming their equity and put these officials in their rightful places.

They were elected to “serve” and look after our welfare, not the other way around.

So next time we see our officials feeling entitled, travelling “first class” in luxury and comfort, stare them in the eye with a disgusting look.

They are living off our taxes! They may be numb to shame for now, but nothing lasts forever.

Soon when our people will have awakened and realized the injustice they suffered, these “crocs” will have their karma!
