The Open Book Pelvic Ring Fracture

An Open Book Pelvic Fracture is a severe, life-threatening injury where the front of the pelvic ring is torn apart, like opening a book, often from high-impact trauma like a car crash.

Why it’s very serious:

· It causes massive internal bleeding.
· It can damage organs like the bladder, urethra, and rectum.
· It makes the pelvis unstable, unable to support weight.

Treatment happens in two stages:

1. Emergency Stabilization: A pelvic binder is used to squeeze the pelvis closed to control bleeding, along with blood transfusions.

2. Definitive Repair: Surgery is performed to permanently rebuild the pelvic ring using metal plates and screws.

Recovery is a long process (6+ months) involving no weight-bearing and intensive physical therapy. While a very serious injury, prompt medical care can lead to survival and a significant recovery of function.
