From the Outside Looking In

BY:DONALD SEVILLA

TRANSPARENCY IS KEY

Too many cooks definitely spoil the broth! The flood control scandal investigations have seen so much drama that it now becomes more difficult to ferret out the truth.

The death of former DPWH Usec. Catalina Cabral seen to be a central figure in this corruption mess that rocked our nation, speaks volumes.

Whether her death was a suicide or not, just shows how interestingly suspicious things can be.

The corruption that plagues our nation is wide and deep that it has infiltrated the moral fabric of our society.

We can only wish that we can survive this ordeal and come out a better nation.

Otherwise our country will be going to the dogs if it hasn’t yet.

Just recently, news broke out about lawmakers who are the primary proponents of projects for funding by the DPWH. Our province has once again landed among the top of the list in the so called “DPWH leaks”.

While in itself it does not necessarily equate to corruption, it raises people’s eyebrows.

The billions of funds allocated or released to a particular congressional district more than others, highlights how the system operates establishing the existence of patronage in our institutions.

While patronage politics is nothing new to us, it exposes the vulnerabilities of our democracy to abuse and corruption.

Yet for what it is worth, our public officials in the interest of transparency and accountability should make public their SALNs.

This is the bigger challenge that our people should demand from our political leaders to restore the public’s fate in government.

Without it we will always be engaged in an endless debate between supporters and critics. To put issues to rest, a full disclosure of finances and projects of our politicians is needed.

If one has nothing to hide a waiver of bank accounts is even more admirable to ensure a clean and honest governance.
