Beyond the Bars, the Light of Christmas Shines

While Christmas is often celebrated in homes filled with laughter, music, and family gatherings, its truest meaning was felt in a place rarely associated with festivity. On December 23, 2025, the Bohol Island State University (BISU) Balilihan Campus carried the spirit of the season beyond traditional settings as it successfully held its 3rd Outreach Program, “Pasko para sa mga Binilanggo,” at the Bohol District Jail – Female Dormitory.

The event reflected the belief that Christmas is not defined by location, but by love shared, kindness extended, and hope renewed. For one meaningful day, the jail facility became a space of warmth and celebration, echoing the message that the joy of the season belongs to everyone.

This initiative was made possible through “Dagan sa Katawhan, Tabang para sa Nagkinahanglan 2025,” a fun run for a cause organized by the Aspiring Criminologist of the Philippines Society (ACoPS) in partnership with CCJ student leaders and the entire BISU Balilihan family.

United by a common purpose, the organizers worked together to ensure that the essence of Christmas reached those who are often left out of public celebrations.

The outreach was spearheaded by Dr. Jean F. Nebrea, Campus Director of BISU Balilihan, Dr. Marry Joyce G. Ale, Dean of BISU-CCJ, alongside the faculty and staff and the committed CCJ student leaders.

Their presence highlighted the university’s continued dedication to service, compassion, and community engagement.

In her message, Dr. Nebrea focused on the universal meaning of Christmas—one that transcends situations and circumstances.

“Christmas reminds us to pause, to be grateful, and to share what we have with one another,” she said. “It is a season that calls us to come together as one community, guided by kindness, generosity, and faith. Wherever we may be, the true spirit of Christmas lives in our hearts when we choose to care for others.”

“May this celebration renew our sense of unity and remind us that hope, peace, and love are gifts meant to be shared by all.”

Her words set the tone for a celebration rooted not in differences, but in shared humanity.

One of the women PDLs also shared a message of appreciation, reflecting on the meaning of the occasion rather than individual circumstances.

“Today’s celebration reminds us of what Christmas truly stands for,” she shared. “It is about togetherness, gratitude, and remembering that joy can be found even in simple moments. This gathering made the season feel alive and meaningful.”

“We are thankful for the time, effort, and goodwill shared with us today. It is a Christmas we will remember with warmth and appreciation.”

The program was not merely an outreach activity, it was a celebration of the season itself. Through shared prayers, songs, messages, and moments of reflection, the event captured the essence of Christmas: unity, generosity, and compassion.

More than the gifts distributed, it was the presence, prayers, and shared moments that gave the outreach its deepest meaning. Smiles, quiet tears of joy, warm embraces, and heartfelt gratitude filled the day, reminding everyone present that the spirit of Christmas thrives wherever love and kindness are freely given.

As the BISU Balilihan community continues its mission of service and social responsibility, “Pasko para sa mga Binilanggo 2025” stands as a powerful testament that Christmas is not confined to places of comfort, it lives wherever hearts are open.

Indeed, beyond the bars and within shared moments of goodwill, the light of Christmas shone brightly.
