Influenza

We have already discussed influenza but because many are down with this infection nowadays, it is but good to review what  influenza is all about.
T

his is a very common acute self- limited respiratory infection caused by any of the three groups of influenza virus: influenza virus group A, B or C.
The upper respiratory passage is the site of predilection and studies show that the virus enters the respiratory mucosa through the action of a strain specific enzyme called neuraminidase which is found in the upper coating of the virus.
The virus is found in throat washings in the first 5 days of illness. The transmission of flu is by airborne or by direct contact.

Clinically, in the pediatric age group, the onset is sudden with a chilly sensation, high fever and headache.
They will complain of sore throat or painin  swallowing and soon cough will follow that may become hacking and annoying. Muscle and joint pains are common. These symptoms may be present in 3-5 days and may subside gradually.

The prognosis of influenza is good but complications may be present like acute sinusitis, otitis media and bronchopneumonia.

To avoid having influenza it is advised to have yearly flu vaccines. One must build their immunity by having exercises, good sleep and rest, taking vitamin supplements and eating a well-balanced diet.
It is also a must these days to avoid going to crowded places and to wear masks when necessary.
