Higher Power Supply Costs Lead to Increase in January Electricity Rates

For January 2026, Bohol Light’s average residential electricity rate increased to ₱14.13 per kilowatt-hour (kWh)—an increase of ₱1.79/kWh from the December 2025 rate of ₱12.34/kWh.

The average commercial rate also went up to ₱13.55/kWh, higher by ₱1.80/kWh from the previous rate of ₱11.76/kWh.

This adjustment is mainly due to higher generation and transmission costs affecting electricity consumers across the Visayas.

Why did rates increase?

1. Higher generation costs (WESM)

The biggest factor behind the increase is the rise in electricity prices at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM). Starting mid-November, power supply in the Visayas became tighter due to reduced output from several power plants. This resulted in more high-price periods in the market, leading to higher generation costs reflected in the January bills.

2. Increase in line rental charges

Because of the tight supply situation, line rental charges rose significantly—by 92% compared to the previous month—adding further pressure on overall electricity rates.

3. Higher transmission charges (Ancillary Services)

Transmission costs also increased due to higher Ancillary Service charges. These services are essential to keep the power grid stable and ensure reliable electricity supply.

Important reminder:

The increase in electricity rates is driven by industry-wide factors and affects all consumers. As a distribution utility, Bohol Light does not set or control generation and transmission charges, as these are determined by market conditions and regulatory approvals and are passed on to consumers.

Bohol Light remains committed to transparency and will continue to keep consumers informed to help them better understand changes in electricity rates.
