Maternal Diseases affecting the Baby

It is important to have a good prenatal care to ensure a healthy outcome for the newborn. I will be reviewing with you different disorders of the mother that will have a bad impact on the fetus or Neonate.


1. Cholestasis
– this will result to a preterm delivery

2. Cyanotic heart disease
– this will cause intrauterine growth retardation

3. Diabetes mellitus
– this will cause large for gestational age babies amd hypoglycemia in babies
– for those with severe diabetes problem in pregnant mothers will cause growth retardation in babies

4. Drug addiction
– intrauterine growth retardation and neonatal withdrawal

5. Endemic goiter
– will cause hypothyroidism

6. Grave’s disease
– will cause transient neonatal thyrotoxicosis

7. Herpes gestationalis
Will cause bullous rash in babies

8. Hyperparathyroidism
– will result to Neonatal hypocalcemia

9. Hypertension in pregnant mothers
– will result to intrauterine growth retardation and fetal demise

10. Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
– will cause thrombocytopenia

11. Malignant Melanoma
– will cause placental or fetal tumor

12. Myasthenia gravis
– transient neonatal myasthenia

13. Obesity in pregnant mothers
– will cause macrosomia and hypoglycemia in babies

14. Pre eclampsia and eclampsia
– will result to intrauterine growth retardation, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia and fetal demise

15. Sick cell anemia will cause preterm birth, intrauterine growth retardation

16. Systemic lupus erythematosus
– will cause congenital heart block, rash, anemia, thrombocytopenia and neutropenia in the fetus or neonate
