KFC (Kabataan for Change): A Generation Impact

A Nation That Rewards Liars

By IVY BETALMOS

There is a difficult truth many refuse to confront: in today’s political landscape, dishonesty is no longer a weakness, it is often an advantage.

Politics has become the only profession where a person can lie without shame, twist facts without consequence, and still be rewarded with power. Promises are made not always to be fulfilled, but to persuade. Truth is no longer the standard, perception is.

In most professions, integrity determines survival. A teacher who falsifies records is dismissed. A police officer who abuses authority is condemned. A public servant who steals funds is prosecuted.

But a politician? A politician can make empty promises, deny facts, and still win elections, again and again.

This raises an uncomfortable question:
What kind of system allows this? More importantly, what kind of society tolerates it?

In places like Bohol, the effects are real. Corruption is not just an issue of governance, it is a missing classroom, an unfinished road, a hospital lacking resources. It is delayed progress and lost opportunities.

And yet, many continue to vote for the same leaders, even when their credibility is in question.

Why? Is it loyalty? Familiarity? Or have we simply accepted that dishonesty is part of politics?

Because the moment we stop expecting honesty, we start enabling dishonesty.
Every vote given to a known liar weakens accountability. Every excuse made for corruption strengthens impunity. Every silence allows the cycle to continue.

Over time, this becomes the norm.

When lies no longer shock us and corruption no longer angers us, democracy begins to erode, not through force, but through acceptance.

But it does not have to remain this way.

Democracy belongs to the people. Real change begins when voters demand better when they choose integrity over influence, and truth over convenience.

The question is no longer whether politicians will lie.

The question is:
Will we continue to reward them for it?

Because a nation that rewards liars should not be surprised when truth disappears—and with it, the future it hopes to build.
