FACT- CHECKING THE FAKE NEWS
1. Be not quick to jump the gun on anything you see and read in the internet and various socmed platforms .
2. For responsible journalists reporting on a matter of public interest, you cannot replace a fact with assumptions. In the case of the votation for the impeachment of the Vice President many voted yes while others no and some did not/ were not able to attend and cast a vote. When responsibly reporting never assume a choice for those who were not able to vote, putting words into their mouth. Why assume YES when one could also have chosen NO or vice versa?
3. While journalists have their sources of news it does not follow that if a source may have wrongly assumed things then replicating it as news absolves one from the consequences of such actions. This is why fact-checking is important in contrast to sensationalizing matters.
4. With media’s great power comes an even greater responsibility. To maintain credibility it is also important to acknowledge limitations and shortcomings not flaunt infallibility.
5. Treating a source even without any position in an official capacity on the basis of his word and perceived closeness to powers that be as gospel truth entails certain risks.
6. Personal biases cloud objectivity.
7. Straight from the horse’s mouth, no more no less, unfiltered is the best way to convey a message across.
8. What is not true is false. Fake is the opposite of real or true.
The key pillars of ethical journalism, as defined by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), include:
Seek Truth and Report It: Prioritize accuracy, context, and honest reporting. Avoid distorting facts and avoid stereotyping.
Minimize Harm: Treat sources, subjects, and colleagues with respect. Protect the privacy of individuals and show compassion for those affected by news coverage.
Act Independently: Avoid conflicts of interest, such as accepting gifts or special treatment. Resist influence from advertisers or political groups.
Be Accountable: Correct mistakes promptly, uphold transparency, and encourage audience feedback.
