VOX POPULI

By: Ardy Araneta Batoy

This edition of VOX POPULI is featuring the netizens’ reactions, responses and comments to the question posted on the FB wall of the Managing Editor of The Bohol Tribune.

The question is:“UYON KA BA NGA UNDANGON ANG PAG GAMIT SA CELLPHONE/ MOBILE PHONE SA MGA TULUNGHAAN?” (Are you in favor that the use of cellphones/mobile phones be banned in school?)

The responses from the netizens were:

from KahlilLester Camba: Supak Mam Ardy. Banning of cellphones within School campus won’t prevent guns and others from entering the school. Those ma involve like sa Tacloban incident mam, should be jailed or if dli ganahan ang mga Boholanos, aw pusilon diretso. Owner of firearms angay kasohan jud, nya if pulis aw automatic dismissed from service. One Strike lang.

from Sev Daniel Quijada Abonete: No, Ma’am Ardy. In fact, naka-experience mi ani sauna. An incident happened years ago tung JHS pako (Grade 9 or 10 mi, basta before pandemic) where gi-ban tanan mga touchscreen cellphones sa tanan year levels. If makit-an ka gagamit, holding, or at least having it sa imong bag, it will get confiscated. Ngano nahitabo ni nga ban? Naay elementary students nasakpan ga-watch og porn in their free time within the campus.

After the announcement, the entire campus went livid. Nasuko mi mga higher year levels kag ngano nadamay mi. We were forced to buy keypad phones para lang maka-contact mi sa amoang parents. Even worse, there are times in class where gamit jud kaayo ang amoang touchscreen phones pero dili mi makagamit kay hard-banned lagi. We even found it unfair that our instructors can use their smartphones and not us.

Eventually, due to massive backlash from concerned parents, the student body, and the faculty, the ban was lifted for good and my alma mater never repeated that again (as far as I can remember). It was one of my alma mater’s countless reputation blunders, but not as big as other certain incidents. That is a story for another day.

Anyway, the point is, not only did the ban NOT solve the issue, lisod kaayo iban ang smartphones sa campus kay a lot of learning materials have adapted to the use of such devices. Our smartphones are also our only line of contact sa amoang mga ginikanan. Had such a school shooting tragedy occured sa amoang alma mater during the infamous phone ban, siguro it will be very disastrous.

Agree ko ni Tita Mimi nga ilimit lang ang paggamit og smart devices sa classroom, samot nang mga tig-duwa sa likod while class is happening (guilty as charged). Pero a full ban is not advised kay it’s like sending your children into a black hole where you cannot contact anyone from the outside.

Responsibility nana sa ginikanan nga ioversee nila ang gadget use sa ilang anak and to monitor unsa na content ilang gipang-consume during their developmental years. Unfortunately jud, Ma’am Ardy, in my 21 years of existence on this godforsaken planet, I have seen enough dark material from the Internet disguised as innocent content that can brainwash young children if walay intervention gikan sa mga ginikanan. Maong I’m quite active in warning new parents to not over-expose their children to YouTube just yet.

from Ardy Ines Araneta Batoy to Sev Daniel Quijada Abonete: Good point

from Betty Matig A Jumawid: No. Used of cellphone ky ma influence mga minor sa mga bad element.

from Kurdapya Inday: Maam sa Tagbilaran City Science High School is hi allowed ghapon ang fone, but while on class nka vibrate lang cya during class break mka use ang students ug Teachers. If makit an sa Teacher na ga gamit ug fone ang bata while on class I confiscate ni sa Teacher nya kuhaon sa bata after the whole class, if mausab pa same ghapon kuhaon sa Teacher then ang parents na ang mokuha, if 3rd offense na I confiscate ang fone then ang bata naa nai record. If ang teacher sab masakpan sa mga bata nga ga use ug fone, i report sa principal.

from Ellen Simbajon: Limitahan lang paggamit ug cellphone. gamiton man gud pud na sa research. mga ginikanan ang angay modisiplina ana. iban pud mga violent games online and pornography. maski FB, kaya ba? naa pa jud salida sa TV violente naman tanan like SIGABO. dili angayan tan-awon sa mga kabataan. Ambot ani MTRCB pasar tanan salida man.

from KahlilLester Camba: Ngano uroy pod sa Tagbilaran nga karon ra gipang check o audit (inventory ba term anah?) sa service firearms of law enforcers nato? Dapat sauna ra. Reactive approach na pod. Sorry to those maigo and keyboard warriors nila ha. Nothing personal.

from KahlilLester Camba to Ardy Ines Araneta Batoy: If naa pod involved rumbles mam, I suggest if dunay mosunod rumbles sa Tagbi SIMBAKO PALAYO soon, aw atong pasudlon seminario. Puros man jud mi mga ex-seminarian like your son mam, rest assured we were never involved in rumbles.

from Ardy Ines Araneta Batoy to KahlilLester Camba: Hmmmmnn

from Ayen Ocampo: Morag lisod na man na tita. Siguro inside the rooms while on going ang class. But like sa mga panghitabo ron sa Tacloban mas ganahan ko na dala ra sa akong anak ilang phones.

from Ardy Ines Araneta Batoy to Ayen Ocampo: I understand.

from Maritess Senados Dela Cruz: Kon emergency gamit kaayo ang celpon.

from Froilan Caderao: Mam Ardy a trillion agree.

from Mards Roxas: Maluoy ko mga batan-on. Maglisod samot pangita uyab Maam Ards.

from Ardy Ines Araneta Batoy to Mards Roxas: hahahahaha. Kinsay gatupi nimo Sir Mards?

from Mards Roxas to Ardy Ines Araneta Batoy: Hehehe cge hunahuna Maam nga sa una gcegihan ngali ko bully kay gamay man ko pero na carry ra ngali nako hangtud karon hehe.

         from Gholda Veloso: Yes.

         from Jervie Empe: Maypa.

         from Youph Andoy Quieta: Yes.

         from Ali Ali: Yes.

         from Remlih Olebuc: Uyon.

         from Manuel Toledo: Yes.
