GSIS marks National Pensioners’ Week, expands benefits and services for retirees; GSEL for pensioners to launch Sept. 30
The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) reaffirmed its commitment to provide greater financial security and more accessible services to retired government workers as it marks National Pensioners’ Week, highlighting the expanding range of benefits, financial assistance, insurance, housing and digital services available to pensioners.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., through Proclamation No. 1020, declared the second week of September of every year as National Pensioners’ Week in recognition of the valuable contribution of GSIS and SSS pensioners to national development. The proclamation directs GSIS and SSS to lead the annual observance and identify programs, activities and projects for pensioners.
GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso said the directive is being translated into concrete programs that provide pensioners with stronger financial protection, more options to manage their needs and easier access to GSIS services.
“Ang ating mga pensionado ay naglaan ng malaking bahagi ng kanilang buhay sa paglilingkod sa bayan. Kaya ang pagkilala sa kanila ay hindi lamang isang selebrasyon. Isinasagawa natin ito sa pamamagitan ng mga programang nagbibigay sa kanila ng mas maraming benepisyo, financial options at mas madaling access sa serbisyo ng GSIS,” Veloso said.
Under its Ginhawa for All Grand or GFAL Grand package for pensioners and surviving spouses, GSIS provides old-age pension, survivorship pension, pension increases, Christmas Cash Gift, Milestone Benefits and funeral benefits. Qualified pensioners may also avail themselves of pension loans, pensioners’ emergency loans and the Choice of Loan Amortization Schedule for Pensioners or CLASP.
Among the latest enhancements is the increase in the funeral benefit from ₱30,000 to ₱50,000 for qualified members and pensioners for claims arising from deaths occurring on or after July 13, 2026.
GSIS has also strengthened survivorship protection by removing the previous cap on the survivorship pension. Qualified surviving spouses may receive the full benefit equivalent to 50% of the deceased member or pensioner’s pension. Cohabitation is also no longer a ground for stopping the survivorship pension, while remarriage remains a ground for termination.
The annual Christmas Cash Gift has likewise been expanded. Beginning in 2025, qualified pro-rata pensioners and pensioners under the Portability Law were included for the first time. Eligible pensioners receive an amount equivalent to one month’s pension or ₱10,000, whichever is lower, subject to program rules.
Qualified old-age and disability pensioners in areas declared under a state of calamity may also avail themselves of the GSIS Emergency Loan, subject to applicable program requirements. GSIS has continued to open emergency loan windows in affected areas to provide financial assistance to qualified members and pensioners.
GSIS has likewise provided financial relief through Balik Ginhawa or the Loan Moratorium Through Refund, which allows qualified members and pensioners with eligible existing loans to receive refunds corresponding to covered loan amortizations without having to take out another loan.
Applications are made through GSIS Touch and may be submitted until October 31, 2026, subject to program guidelines.
As of September 21, GSIS had returned close to ₱20 billion through the first and enhanced Balik Ginhawa programs, covering nearly 1.6 million loan contracts refunded to over 700,000 qualified members and pensioners.
On September 30, GSIS will further expand its financial options for retirees with the launch of the Ginhawa Solar Energy Loan or GSEL for qualified pensioners, extending the green financing program initially offered to active government workers.
Under GSEL, qualified pensioners may borrow up to ₱500,000, payable for up to five years at 5% interest per annum, with no service fee, to finance the purchase and installation of solar energy systems. Applications will be filed through GSIS Touch, subject to eligibility and documentary requirements.
GSIS launched GSEL for active members in March 2026 to make residential solar energy systems more accessible to government workers and help households manage long-term electricity costs.
“Sa pagbubukas ng GSEL sa ating mga pensionado, binibigyan natin sila ng karagdagang financial option na maaaring makatulong na mapababa ang kanilang gastusin sa kuryente. Patuloy nating tinitingnan kung paano natin maiaangkop ang mga programa ng GSIS sa tunay na pangangailangan ng ating retirees,” Veloso said.
Beyond pension and loan benefits, pensioners may also avail themselves of General Insurance products under GFAL Grand, including Fire Insurance, Motor Vehicle Insurance and Personal Accident Insurance, subject to applicable terms and requirements. The GSIS Motor Vehicle Insurance and Personal Accident Insurance programs specifically include GSIS retirees and pensioners among those qualified to apply.
Housing options are also available through the Lease with Option to Buy or GFAL LWOB, which forms part of the programs under GFAL Grand. The program provides qualified clients access to selected GSIS acquired properties through a lease arrangement with an option to purchase, subject to applicable program guidelines and availability of properties.
GSIS continues to make these benefits and services more accessible through digital and alternative service channels. GSIS Touch enables pensioners to access services such as the Annual Pensioners Information Revalidation (APIR) and loan applications without having to visit a GSIS office. Pensioners may also access GSIS through its website, 24/7 Contact Center, social media platforms and online filing facilities.
“Hindi lamang buwanang pensiyon ang maaasahan ng ating retirees sa GSIS. Mula sa survivorship, funeral, milestone at Christmas benefits hanggang sa loans, Balik Ginhawa, GSEL, general insurance, housing at digital services, patuloy nating pinapalawak ang suportang maaasahan nila pagkatapos ng maraming taon ng paglilingkod sa gobyerno,” Veloso said.
Veloso said GSIS will continue to enhance its programs and services to provide pensioners and their families with social protection that is more accessible, responsive and relevant to their changing needs.
Bohol hosts national workshop on cetacean conservation
Government agencies, scientists, conservation groups, academics and tourism stakeholders gathered in Bohol this week to begin drafting a national plan to protect whales, dolphins and other cetaceans in Philippine waters.
The National Plan of Action for the Conservation of Cetaceans (NPOA-CC) Development Workshop opened Monday and runs through Wednesday at the Bohol Provincial Capitol’s Ceremonial Hall, bringing together representatives from national agencies, universities, nonprofits and local enforcement to assess threats and map out conservation priorities.
Organizers said the workshop marked a turning point for how the country treats marine mammals, stressing that cetaceans deserve protection from harmful interactions and human-induced threats, not just fascination. Bohol’s status as a UNESCO Global Geopark and Regenerative Island was cited as fitting context for hosting the event.
The workshop drew participants from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, protected area management boards, and universities including Bohol Island State University-Calape, University of St. La Salle, University of the Philippines Visayas and Silliman University.
Conservation groups such as BALYENA.ORG, Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines and the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network also took part, alongside the Philippine Coast Guard and tourism industry representatives.
BFAR Chief Fishery Regulatory Officer Roy Ortega said the goal was to translate a shared vision into concrete action.
“What comes after a vision is, of course, a plan that will help us align ourselves to action or execution,” Ortega said.
CSO Week brings health services to Bohol’s civil society sector
The Bohol provincial government brought medical, dental and maternal care to Civil Service Organization (CSO) Week participants on Sept. 22, 2026 at the Bohol Cultural Center.
The health and wellness activity served 104 CSO officers and members, with 36 receiving medical checkups, 54 undergoing dental extractions and 14 accessing maternal health services.
The initiative was carried out through the Medical Outreach Unit of the Governor’s Office (GO-MOU) and TaRSIER 117. Medical services included consultations for adults and seniors, while dental care covered checkups, prophylaxis, cleaning and extractions. Maternal care included reproductive health services.
The activity was part of the second day of the five-day CSO Week, themed “Co-creating Resilience: Elevating People’s Councils through Cross-Sectoral Partnership.” The event gathers Bohol provincial government-accredited CSOs from various sectors to strengthen partnerships and civil society participation in governance.
CSO Week is organized by the Bohol People’s Council in partnership with the provincial government, through the Provincial CSO Desk Office and the Provincial Cooperative Development Office. The celebration continues with activities aimed at deepening cross-sectoral ties and strengthening CSOs’ role in governance and community development.
New tarsier research center opens in Corella, Bohol
A new research and tourism facility dedicated to the Philippine tarsier was inaugurated last week at the Philippine Tarsier Foundation Inc. (PTFI) Sanctuary here, bringing together provincial officials, researchers and conservation advocates.
The PTFI Tourist Center and Research Center is intended to support scientific research, environmental education and conservation programs for the tarsier, one of the country’s most iconic species.
The facility also complements Bohol’s designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
British Ambassador to the Philippines Sarah Hulton, who delivered remarks at the event, said research centers provide the foundation for effective conservation by helping stakeholders understand species and ecosystems, identify threats and develop science-based solutions. She cited the United Kingdom’s broader commitment to supporting nature conservation and global biodiversity efforts.
Hulton led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, joined by Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte, PTFI Chairman Soliman Fonacier, Provincial Tourism Council Co-Chair Lucas Nunag and other stakeholders.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the research center and tarsier viewing area.
Loay launches cashless payments for market, tricycle fares
Residents can now pay for market goods and tricycle, or “bao-bao,” fares using GCash and other e-wallets after the town launched the Paleng-QR Ph Plus program Sept. 22, 2026.
Mayor Hilario Ayuban led the launch alongside officials from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and other government agencies, including Conrado Ragay, area director of the BSP Visayas Regional Office; Gregorio Baccay III, head of BSP’s Regional Economic Affairs; and Johnjoan Mende, provincial director of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Officials from the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Information and Communications Technology also attended, along with members of the Sangguniang Bayan, municipal office heads, barangay captains, local business owners and representatives of financial service providers.
Digital payment providers participating in the program include GCash, Maya, Palawan Pawnshop, LandBank, BDO, BPI, FCB, Security Bank, PNB and RCBC.
Ayuban said the shift makes daily transactions easier for residents, who will no longer need to rely solely on cash for market purchases or tricycle rides.
Paleng-QR Ph Plus is a joint program of the BSP and DILG that promotes QR code payments in public markets and local transportation.
Diesel prices may rise by up to P11, gasoline by P5 per liter
Bohol drivers and motorists should brace for another steep increase in fuel prices next week amid the ongoing Middle East crisis, the Department of Energy (DOE) said.
Diesel prices could rise by as much as P11 per liter, while gasoline may increase by P4.50 to P5 per liter, the DOE said.
The agency attributed the expected price hike to continuing tensions in the Middle East, which have affected crude oil prices in the global market.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said there is no indication that the regional conflict will end soon.
The DOE said the price of Dubai crude oil exceeded $100 per barrel from Aug. 13 to Sept. 11, 2026.
Under the law, the average price of Dubai crude oil must reach $80 per barrel for the suspension of the excise tax to take effect.
The agency also expects another significant increase in fuel prices next week if the Middle East crisis continues.
Lite Shipping yet to decide on EV and hybrid vehicle ban
Lite Shipping has no announcement yet on whether they will ban EV and hybrid vehicles.
Travelers are still waiting, especially residents of Bohol where the number of people using Electric Vehicles (EV) is increasing, on whether Lite Shipping will issue a directive to ban the boarding of EV and hybrid vehicles on their ships.
This concern arose following the tragic incident in Coron, Palawan on September 9 where the vessel MV June Aster burned down causing the death of 77 people, where an EV cargo is strongly suspected to have been the cause of the outbreak of the fire.
Due to concern over the said incident, Montenegro Shipping Lines and Starhorse Shipping Lines have already announced that they strictly prohibit the boarding of all types of EV and hybrid vehicles on their RoRo vessels as a precautionary measure against fire coming from lithium-ion battery.
While Lite Shipping has no official statement regarding this, many EV owners in Bohol remain waiting on whether their ability to travel to other islands will be affected.
Bohol has no active ASF cases but risk remains
There are no more active cases of African swine fever (ASF) in Bohol since Sept. 16, but the risk of the return of the disease remains, according to the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV).
Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Meydallyn Paman stated the update during the full council meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRM).
The last positive case in Bohol before the new outbreak was recorded on April 8, 2026.
But on August 10, there was a new local case discovered in Valencia.
Since Sept. 16, there are no more active cases recorded in the province.
Meanwhile, Corella was upgraded from Red or infected zone to Pink or buffer/recovery zone, as part of the recovery of areas affected by ASF.
The applications of Bilar, Alicia, Sikatuna, Sevilla, Ubay and Batuan for zone upgrading were also approved and endorsed, which are still under evaluation at the regional and national level.
The OPV explained that the transfer from Red to Pink does not mean that the area is completely free from ASF.
Surveillance, biosecurity, border control and controlled re-entry of pigs are still ongoing.
Paman also discussed the AVAC ASF LIVE vaccine, which was approved by the Bureau of Animal Industry for commercial sale on Sept. 2.
The vaccine is allowed for healthy market hogs or fatteners, but not for breeder gilts, sows and boars unless allowed by the veterinary authority.
The OPV emphasized that the vaccine is only an additional measure against ASF and is not a replacement for biosecurity, control of movement of pigs and continuous surveillance.
BM Cepedoza tells barangay officials, aspirants to prepare for Nov. 2 BSKE
Board Member Romulo Cepedoza, President of the Liga ng mga Barangay (LNB) in the Philippines – Bohol Chapter, encouraged barangay officials and those who want to run in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to continue preparing for the Nov. 2, 2026 election.
According to Cepedoza, the move of Congress to move the BSKE to 2028 has not yet become law, so it should not be thought that the election is already canceled or postponed.
The postponement measure was already approved by the Senate on Sept. 14, and it was also adopted by the House of Representatives.
The said measure has been sent to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his signature or review.
If signed by the President, the BSKE will be moved from Nov. 2, 2026 to November 2028, while the term of barangay and SK officials will be extended from four to five years.
While it has not yet become law, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) continues to prepare for the Nov. 2, 2026 elections.
The filing of the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) is also scheduled from Sept. 28 to Oct. 5, unless the postponement becomes law before the filing period begins.
The current schedule is based on Republic Act No. 12232, which was signed by Marcos in August 2025 and moved the BSKE from December 2025 to Nov. 2, 2026.
For now, Cepedoza advises barangay officials and aspirants in Bohol to continue preparing while waiting for the President’s action on the proposed 2028 postponement.
BPPO says Bohol remains peaceful on 54th Martial Law anniversary; no incident recorded
Bohol remained peaceful during the commemoration of the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, where no incident related to it was recorded and no rally or protest was reported in Tagbilaran City and other towns in the province.
According to PMaj. Joseph Lopena, public information officer of the Bohol Police Provincial Office (BPPO), the police did not receive any report of disorder, threat or other incident related to the anniversary on Sept. 21.
The full-alert status of the BPPO ended at 12 midnight on Sept. 21, in accordance with the directive of the national headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
PMaj. Lopena thanked the public, partner agencies and police personnel for their cooperation in maintaining peace and order in the province.
The BPPO, under the leadership of Provincial Director PCol. Patricio Degay Jr., also urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any incident or suspicious activity through Unified 911 or the nearest police station.
Crime in Bohol decreases by 3.4% – Bohol PPO
The total crime incidents in Bohol decreased by 3.4% from July 1 to Sept. 15, 2026, from 1,381 to 1,334 cases, according to the Bohol Police Provincial Office (BPPO).
PLt. Col. Joseph Berondo, deputy director for operations of the BPPO, presented the data during the joint meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) and Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC) on Sept. 22, which was led by Governor Aris Aumentado together with Vice Governor Nicanor Besas Jr. as vice chairperson.
Peace and order cases decreased by 6.37%, from 612 to 573, while public safety incidents decreased by 1.04%, from 769 to 761.
Among the eight focus crimes, homicide decreased by 67%, robbery by 50%, motorcycle carnapping by 25%, rape by 24% and murder by 22%.
But theft increased by 61%, from 23 to 37 cases, while physical injury increased by 14%, from 22 to 25.
Anti-illegal drug operations also increased by 8.96%, from 212 to 231, while operations against illegal firearms increased from 16 to 17.
The BPPO, under the leadership of PCol. Patricio Degay Jr., stated that operations against crime and illegal drugs will continue for the safety of the community.
Cloud seeding in Bohol to start this week
Cloud seeding operations in Bohol will start this week to help increase rainfall and lessen the effect of El Niño on the agriculture sector.
According to Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte, the Notice to Proceed for the winning bidder of the operation is expected to have been issued yesterday, Sept. 21.
The arrival of representatives of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) and Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) who will lead the operation is also expected, while the operations center will be placed at the Bohol-Panglao International Airport.
Caberte explained that not only rice fields are the target of the cloud seeding, but the whole agriculture sector of Bohol.
The cloud seeding operations will cover 60 hours, where 31 hours will be shouldered by the provincial government and 29 hours by the Department of Agriculture.
The operation was discussed during the meeting of the Technical Working Group of the Provincial El Niño Task Force led by Caberte under the order of Governor Aris Aumentado.
Representatives of the Department of Agriculture, National Irrigation Administration, Philippine Crop Insurance Corp., Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Aboitiz InfraCapital and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines attended the meeting.
Motorcycle in Guindulman stripped by thief
A motorcycle owned by a man from Mangga Guinacot, Municipality of Guindulman, was stripped by an unidentified thief on September 20, 2026, Sunday.
According to the complainant who was interviewed by media, at dawn of the same date the motorcycle that was just parked at the victim’s house disappeared, they searched for it and they found the motorcycle in the bushes half a kilometer away from the victim’s house.
The motorcycle, a Raider J115, had no more wheels, muffler and carburetor.
They have already reviewed the CCTV in the said area to identify the person behind the said theft.
Lite Ferries to implement 10% fare increase starting September 23
Lite Shipping Corporation (Lite Ferries) issued an official advisory to its passengers and shippers that they will implement an additional 10% increase in their current base tariff rates.
The said increase will be effective starting September 23, 2026, where the continuous increase in crude prices (fuel prices) is cited as the reason for it.
The management of the company explained that this step is very necessary to continue providing uninterrupted, safe, and reliable service to the public.
Because of this development, the company hopes for deep understanding and thanks its customers for their continued trust.
School security in Bohol discussed by PPOC-PADAC amid school shootings
The security of schools in Bohol amid the successive school shooting incidents in the country, including the latest incident in South Cotabato, was discussed by the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) and Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC).
The said issue was discussed during the joint meeting of the PPOC and PADAC on Sept. 21 led by Governor Aris Aumentado, together with Vice Governor Nicanor Besas Jr. as vice chairperson at the New Capitol here in Tagbilaran City.
Retired General Arturo Evangelista, Executive Assistant for Peace, Order and Public Safety of the Office of the Governor, pushed for the Provincial School Safety and Student Violence Prevention Framework as a step to strengthen security and prevent violence in schools.
The framework is aimed at coordination between the provincial government, Department of Education (DepEd), Philippine National Police (PNP), LGUs, parents, schools and other stakeholders.
Part of the proposed framework is the 4P’s of crisis management—predict, plan, prepare and prevent, including measures against possible school security threats in the province.
The proposal was referred to the Special Action Committee (SAC) on Anti-Criminality, which is headed by the Bohol Police Provincial Office (BPPO), for further study and preparation of recommendations to the council.
Visayas grid placed under red and yellow alert due to lack of power supply
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) imposed Red and Yellow Alert status on the Visayas Grid on September 22, 2026, based on their update released at 1:40 in the afternoon.
The Red Alert is effective from 5:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon, while the Yellow Alert is implemented from 3:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon, and will be re-imposed from 6:00 to 9:00 in the evening.
Based on information, the available capacity of the grid is only at 2,487MW, which is lower compared to the expected peak demand of 2,550MW.
The said Red Alert was declared because the power supply is not enough to meet the needs of consumers and the regulating requirement of the transmission grid.
Some of the main reasons that affected the declaration of these alerts are the non-operation of large coal plants in the Visayas including TVI 1, PEDC 3, and KSPC 2, as well as the outage of PGPP2 units with 56.6MW.
Aside from this, an increase in the evening demand forecast estimated to reach 130MW was also recorded, along with limited import of electricity from the Mindanao grid.
In total, 957.3MW of supply was lost from the grid due to many plants that are on forced outage — some of which have been broken since past years — while 18 plants are also currently running on derated capacities.
More Japan-Bohol flights set; Aumentado pushes sustainable tourism
The strong push of the Province of Bohol as a leading destination for foreign tourists continues after Governor Erico Aris Aumentado announced the arrival of additional direct charter flights from the country of Japan.
According to the governor, the said development is a result of their successful business and tourism mission in Japan that resulted in the very first direct charter flight from Narita to Bohol-Panglao International Airport.
He also added that there are additional flights scheduled this coming December and in the first quarter of 2027, which shows the good cooperation between the government and local tourism stakeholders.
Despite the increasing number of tourists entering the province, the official firmly reminded of the importance of taking care of the environment.
Aumentado said that we will continue to promote sustainable tourism so that we can preserve the natural beauty of our province and keep it for future generations.
He also said that Bohol has many beautiful and affordable destinations suitable for various preferences of local and foreign visitors.
While tourism is progressing, the governor called on the public to forward their complaints and grievances to the proper agency so they can be addressed immediately.
The governor also said that if there are concerns or problems observed, we ask everyone to forward them to the Office of the Governor or to the Bohol Provincial Tourism Office so that appropriate action can be given.
Oliva, BSP to lead DigitALL launch in Catigbian
Catigbian Mayor Benjie Oliva and officials of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) led the launching of the “DigitALL” digital transformation program in Catigbian on Sept. 23, which aims to expand cashless payments and ease government service.
The activity was scheduled at 9 in the morning at the Catigbian Sports & Activity Center, where new digital platforms for residents and businesses were introduced.
Joining Oliva in the activity were BSP Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat and personnel of BSP Visayas who helped guide and coordinate the cashless initiative.
One of the main programs implemented was the Paleng-QR Ph Plus, which will allow residents to use QR code in paying for goods in the market and tricycle fare.
The DICT eGovPH Integrated Catigbian eLGU App was also launched, which will serve as a digital one-stop shop for various services of the municipality.
Among its services are eBOSS for online business registration and processing, eCedula for community tax certificate, eLCR for civil registry transactions and inquiries, and eNews for announcements and updates of the municipality.
According to Mayor Oliva, the program aims to make transactions faster, safer and easier, while reducing long lines and the need for personal appearance at government offices.
BLCI to enforce price cap; Power rate to drop in September
Bohol Light Company Inc. (BLCI) will implement the regional Secondary Price Cap (SPC) of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), which will result in an estimated P0.03 per kilowatt-hour reduction in electricity bills of the company’s consumers for the September 2026 billing.
BLCI announced the said development during the press conference held on Sept. 22, where Engr. Paulino Almedilla, Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, and Engr. Jozon Castro, Manager-Corporate Energy Sourcing and Commercial Affairs, faced the Bohol media.
The reduction in billing is a result of ERC Case No. 2026-048 MC, which orders the regional implementation of SPC for Visayas and Mindanao grids, and is implemented retroactively for the August 2026 billing period.
The aim of the SPC is to prevent the big impact of the increase in electricity price in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) to consumers.
In August, WESM prices in the Visayas increased significantly due to tight supply and non-operation of large power generating units.
According to Engr. Almedilla, the regional price cap helped prevent the entire cost of high WESM prices from being passed on to consumers.
In the company’s estimate, a household that consumes 200 kilowatt-hours per month can save around P6 in electricity bill for September.
But it was clarified that the reduction of P0.03 per kWh is not equivalent to a 54-percent decrease in the total electricity bill.
According to the ERC, the regional recalculation may reduce the average August WESM price in Visayas from around P18.59 to P8.47 per kWh, or about 54 percent.

Bohol police seize P14M drugs, nab 683
Nearly P14 million worth of illegal drugs were seized by the police in Bohol, while 683 individuals were arrested in various operations from July 1 to Sept. 15, 2026, according to the Bohol Police Provincial Office (BPPO).
The said data was presented by BPPO Deputy Provincial Director for Operations PLt. Col. Joseph Berondo during the joint meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council and Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council led by Governor Aris Aumentado and Vice-Governor Nic Besas, the vice-chairperson.
In the campaign against illegal drugs, the Bohol PPO conducted 154 operations, which resulted in the arrest of 157 suspects and seizure of 2,057.03 grams of illegal drugs estimated to be worth P13.99 million.
In the campaign against loose firearms, the Bohol PPO conducted 208 operations, where 16 were arrested and 198 firearms were accounted for, 30 of them under Bilang Boga and 168 under Kontra Boga.
In the apprehension of wanted persons, the Bohol PPO conducted 195 operations that resulted in the arrest of 195 wanted individuals, including 63 Most Wanted Persons and 132 Other Wanted Persons.
Meanwhile, 315 people were arrested in 123 operations against illegal gambling, where P23,507 in bets were seized.
The numbers cover operations throughout the province against illegal drugs, loose firearms, wanted persons and illegal gambling from July to Sept. 15.
BM Binlod pushes probe on overpricing complaints in Bohol
Third District Board Member Nathaniel Binlod pushed for an investigation into complaints of overpricing of goods and fares in Bohol.
Binlod raised the issue during his privilege speech at the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan yesterday, Tuesday, Sept. 22, where he said that not only food such as fish and coconut were complained about due to high prices, but also van-for-hire, tricycle and habal-habal.
He asked local governments, especially in areas with major tourist attractions, to strengthen monitoring and implementation of price rules to address complaints of excessive charges.
According to Binlod, criticism of high prices is valid, but it must first be supported by investigation and clear facts before making accusations against officials or local governments.
He also pushed for cooperation among hotel and resort operators, restaurants, transport operators, barangay and local governments to address the problem of overpricing.
After his privilege speech, Binlod formally pushed to refer the issue to the Committee of the Whole for investigation, discussion and possible legislative action.
The regular session was presided over by Senior Board Member Tita Baja as temporary presiding officer, while Board Member Dionisio Joseph Balite was the floor leader.
Earlier, a complaint about a P1,650 pompano in Panglao spread on social media, which sparked discussion about the high cost of food and other expenses in Bohol.
The discussion happened while tourist arrivals in Bohol dropped by 59.3 percent in the first quarter of 2026, from 417,142 in 2025 to 170,016. Domestic arrivals also dropped by 73 percent and foreign arrivals by about 40 percent.
VM Jumawid urges tourists to ‘travel like a local’
Batuan Vice Mayor Antonino “Dodo” Jumawid encouraged tourists to choose more affordable accommodation and eateries to reduce the cost of their visit to Bohol.
Jumawid expressed his suggestion amid concerns about high prices of food and other tourism services in the province, including the much-discussed P1,650 one serving of pompano in Panglao.
According to him, tourists who want to save on cost can “travel like a local” by staying in homestays, garden accommodation and small lodgings, instead of relying only on big hotels.
He also recommended eating at carinderias and family-run eateries, which are cheaper and also help small local businesses.
According to Jumawid, there is no need for a big budget to enjoy the beautiful places, culture and hospitality of Boholanos.
In Batuan, he mentioned gardens and hostels as some of the options for tourists looking for cheaper accommodation.
Jumawid acknowledged that there are still issues in the tourism sector that need to be resolved, including concerns about high prices in some establishments.
He also encouraged local governments to continue supporting tourism businesses, which is one of the important supporters of Bohol’s economy, aside from agriculture.
El Niño damage in Bohol rises to P62.8M; 2,494 farmers affected
Agricultural damage in Bohol due to continuing El Niño has now reached P62.77 million, affecting 2,494 farmers, based on the latest provincial damage assessment.
Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Larry Pamugas presented the data during the meeting of the Technical Working Group of the Provincial El Niño Task Force, based on the El Niño Damage Report for the Agri-Fishery Sector as of Sept. 21.
The amount of damage was recorded from only 10 of the 48 LGUs that have submitted their initial damage assessment, so the total damages are expected to rise further as reports from other towns are received.
The biggest reported damage was in Valencia and Dimiao amounting to P39.8 million, followed by Buenavista, P18.5 million; Inabanga, P18.1 million; Bilar, P10.9 million; Loboc, P4.9 million; Tubigon, P3.6 million; Getafe, P2.9 million; Balilihan, P2.6 million; and Bien Unido, P1.06 million.
The provincial government continues to collect damage reports and assess measures and assistance for farmers affected by severe drought.
The P62.77 million initial damage estimate is expected to increase further because only 10 of 48 LGUs have submitted their data.
Bohol PDRRMC seeks help on Gallares Hospital overcrowding
The Bohol Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) asked for help from the Department of Health (DOH) due to severe congestion at the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital in Tagbilaran City, which has exceeded its capacity to care for patients.
According to Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte, due to the large number of patients, there are some who are not attended to immediately and have no place to stay inside the hospital.
The PDRRMC approved during their full council meeting on Sept. 18 a resolution urging DOH Secretary Edwin Mercado to act on the situation of Gallares Hospital and find ways to reduce its congestion.
According to Caberte, there are still vacant beds at the Governor Celestino Gallares Multi Specialty Medical Center in Cortes, so the DOH needs to look at how to use that capacity to help patients needing care.
Caberte and Gov. Aris Aumentado are scheduled to meet with DOH Secretary Edwin Mercado together with officials of DOH Region 7 to directly discuss the problem.
The governor and Caberte will bring the resolution of the PDRRMC to the said meeting and ask for DOH measures to solve the congestion of Gallares Hospital in Tagbilaran, which is run by the Department of Health.
Food and retail options at Bohol-Panglao airport expanded by Aboitiz
Aboitiz InfraCapital Bohol Airport Corp. (ABAC) is now expanding the dining and retail options inside the Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA) to respond to the increasing passengers passing through the airport.
Since ABAC formally took over operations, BPIA has already served more than 2.16 million passengers, a sign of the continuing rise in demand for local and international travel to the province.
Through this new development, great attention is given to Bol-anon products under the One Town, One Product (OTOP) Program of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), where local entrepreneurs and artisans are given wide opportunity to showcase their delicacies, handicrafts, and souvenirs to tourists.
This step is part of the broader plan of Aboitiz InfraCapital to develop the infrastructure and tourism industry of Bohol.

Councilor Borja pushes review of Hangos Road due to expected SM Mall
Tagbilaran City Councilor Leonides “Edi” Borja pushed for a review of the condition of Hangos Road, especially since the construction of the expected SM Mall in the area is getting closer.
Borja raised the issue during the regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod yesterday, Sept. 22, which was presided over by City Vice-Mayor Adam Relson Jala.
Borja acknowledged the efforts of the provincial government under Governor Aris Aumentado in seeking funds for the widening of Hangos Road, including coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) because Camp Bernido will be affected by the road widening and the right-of-way.
However, he expressed concern about the situation of tricycle drivers and motorists who regularly pass through Hangos Road, especially since there are portions that are not yet cemented and the road widening has not yet been completed.
Because of this, the council will summon in the next session the City Engineer and City Planning and Development Officer to clarify the status and plans for said road.
Borja also wants to know the plan for Governor Erico Boyles Aumentado Road, which he identified as an important passage once the SM Mall is built, including the need for additional roads and drainage system around the project.
Tagbilaran’s P20 minimum tricycle fare awaits mayor’s signature, set for Sept. 28 rollout
The new P20 minimum tricycle fare in Tagbilaran City is not yet effective because Mayor Jane Yap has not yet signed the resolution for the provisional fare increase.
This was confirmed by Tagbilaran City Traffic Management Office chief Tony Samante.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod already approved the resolution on Sept. 15, but it has not yet been signed by the mayor due to her official business in Metro Manila.
Under the proposed new fare, the minimum will be P20, while an additional P2 per succeeding kilometer will be charged, the discount for PWD, senior citizen and students will still remain.
According to Samante, Mayor Yap is expected to sign the resolution this week, now that she has returned to the city.
It will also be published in the newspaper on Sept. 27, Sunday as part of the process.
If the schedule is followed, the new fare may start on Sept. 28, Monday.
For now, the minimum fare is still P15 and P3 per succeeding kilometer, based on the current city ordinance.
The fare increase was pushed by tricycle operators and TODA due to the continuous increase in gasoline prices.
On Sept. 22, petroleum prices increased again, where diesel in Bohol has already exceeded P100 per liter, while gasoline is also nearly P100.
Illegal lumber and mining equipment seized in joint operation in Trinidad, Bohol
Authorities seized various illegal forest products and mining equipment during a joint operation conducted in Brgy. Kauswagan, town of Trinidad, province of Bohol.
The successful operation was led by DENR-CENRO Talibon, assisted by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Bohol MARPSTA, CIDG Bohol, and Trinidad Municipal Police Station.
The said operation was launched due to alleged violations of mining and environmental or forestry laws.
Among those confiscated at the site were 29 pieces of Anabiong lumber, five stumps of Anilao, rod mills, water pump, hopper, panning basin, and materials with recoverable gold (gold ore materials).
At present, all seized evidence has been fully documented and is now in the safe custody of the authorities.
Appropriate cases and legal action will now be filed against those guilty who were involved in the said illegal activity.
PTFI opens new tourist and research center in Corella
The new Tourist and Research Center of the Philippine Tarsier Foundation, Inc. (PTFI) located at the Corella Tarsier Sanctuary was formally inaugurated on September 18, 2026.
The historic event was attended and honored by the presence of H.E. Sarah Hulton OBE, the British Ambassador to the Philippines, together with Bohol Governor Erico Aris Aumentado.
The opening of the said facility is expected to further help in the study and care of the tarsiers which are among the main attractions of the province.
“Through this facility, we can further strengthen our efforts to protect and preserve our Philippine tarsier, while also improving research and responsible tourism in the sanctuary,” Governor Aumentado stated during the inauguration.
The governor was also pleased that Ambassador Hulton fully enjoyed her tour of the sanctuary.
The ambassador revealed that King Charles III of Britain himself had personally seen the tarsiers before, which gave special interest to the king.
According to the governor, this is a great pride and a good sign of recognition from other countries of the province of Bohol, especially of its unique culture, natural wealth, and its status as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
“We will continue to protect our environment and the treasures that we preserve for future generations,” the governor further urged.
33-year-old HVI arrested in Tagbilaran drug bust, over P327K shabu seized
A 33-year-old reported High-Value Individual (HVI) was arrested in a drug operation conducted by the City Drug Enforcement Team (CDET) of the Tagbilaran City Police Station at around 10:28 in the evening, September 17, 2026, in Purok 1, Brgy. Manga, Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
The operation resulted in the successful seizure of two (2) heat-sealed sachets containing suspected shabu.
It has a total gross weight of 48.2 grams and an estimated value of PhP 327,760 based on the Standard Drug Price (SDP).
The said operation was conducted under the supervision of PLTCOL Joey Mallare Bicoy, OIC of Tagbilaran City Police Station, and led by PLT Greg Reyes, the CDET Team Leader, with close coordination with PDEA.
The arrested person as well as the confiscated evidence are currently in police custody for proper documentation and disposition in accordance with existing laws and procedures.
Aumentado meets with DENR and NWRB to push water permit for bulk water supply project
Governor Erico Aris Aumentado met with Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Atty. Juan Miguel T. Cuna and officials of the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) to formally request the issuance of the necessary Water Rights or Water Permit to support the province’s Bulk Water Supply Project.
The said project is aimed at providing a reliable and sufficient water supply to eight towns that will be included in the service.
It is expected that the said initiative will be funded through the support of the World Bank, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) as part of measures to develop water infrastructure.
The governor explained that this project is very important especially in areas where commercial activities are rapidly developing, population is increasing, and tourism requires a larger and continuous supply of water.
Under the Water Code of the Philippines, it is necessary to have proper water rights evidenced by a water permit before the planning, funding, and implementation of the said project can be fully continued in accordance with the law.
The provincial government assured that it will continue to strengthen coordination among DENR, NWRB, DPWH, DILG, World Bank, and various local governments to quickly address the growing need for water and further improve the basic service for communities.
“Water for the people, progress, and the future,” Aumentado further stated.
P5-M cloud seeding vs El Niño fast-tracked
The Provincial Government of Bohol has fast-tracked the procurement of the P5-million cloud-seeding operation to help lessen the impact of El Niño on agriculture. Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte announced during the full-council meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council last Thursday, Sept. 17, that the contract may be awarded on Friday, Sept. 18 after placing the procurement under emergency procedure due to its urgency. Two companies, Pegasus and Fliteline, have expressed interest in implementing the cloud-seeding operation. The P5 million from the provincial disaster risk reduction and management fund is enough for about 31 hours of cloud-seeding flights. The province will also negotiate with Aboitiz to reduce the cost of aircraft services. If the contract is awarded on the set date, cloud seeding may start on Monday, Sept. 21. Meanwhile, the other P7 million fund from the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Soils and Water Management for cloud seeding is still in the procurement process. The PDRRMC emphasized the urgency of the operation as a mitigation measure against El Niño which has affected agricultural production in Bohol.
Bohol dengue cases rise by 56.7%, 20 dead
Dengue cases in Bohol increased by 56.7 percent from January to mid-September, with 2,942 cases and 20 deaths recorded as of Sept. 12. This was the report of Leonidas Saniel, Dengue Program Coordinator of the Provincial Health Office, during the full council meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) on Sept. 17 at the New Capitol in Tagbilaran City. According to Saniel, in the same period in 2025, 1,877 cases and five deaths were recorded. Of the 20 deaths this year, 12 are laboratory-confirmed, six are probable, and two are suspected. The case fatality rate (CFR) also increased to 0.68 percent, from 0.27 percent in 2025. Those infected with dengue are aged from zero to 94 years old, while the median age is 14 years old. Children aged 5 to 10 years old have the most cases, accounting for 22.6 percent of the total recorded. Slightly more males were infected, accounting for 50.78 percent of all cases. Tagbilaran City has the largest share of cases in the province, accounting for 9.52 percent, followed by Talibon (8.46%), Ubay (6.53%), Tubigon (6.12%) and Inabanga (4.96%). Despite the increase in cases this year, it is still lower than the record dengue outbreak in Bohol in 2024, where it reached 8,889 cases and 21 deaths. The Provincial Health Office continues monitoring of dengue throughout the province and urged LGUs and the public to eliminate places that can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and to seek consultation immediately if there are symptoms of dengue.
LGU worker shot in Inabanga, suspect fled to mountains
A 27-year-old employee of the local government was wounded after being shot while traveling on the national highway in Barangay Lutao, Inabanga on Wednesday. The victim is a resident of Barangay Dait Sur, who was traveling from Barangay Cagawasan to Barangay Badiang when he was shot at 11:50 in the morning. The shooter was identified as a 37-year-old, a resident of Barangay Badiang, who was reportedly following the victim on a motorcycle. The victim was hit in the left shoulder, where the bullet went through to the right shoulder and got lodged near the right clavicle causing it to fracture. After the shooting, the suspect fled towards the mountains and was reportedly wearing a black hooded jacket. Two empty bullet shells believed to be from a .45-caliber weapon were recovered at the crime scene. The hot-pursuit operation by the Inabanga Police Station and other police units continues to arrest the suspect. The police identified the incident as frustrated murder.
Bohol earns P14.3-M sales at 37th Philippine Travel Mart
The province of Bohol recorded P14.3 million in sales during the three-day 37th Philippine Travel Mart (PTM) 2026, showing the continued interest in the province as a popular tourism destination despite current economic challenges. The event was held on September 4 to 6 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Metro Manila. First charter flight from Indonesia arrives in Bohol, 56 passengers
Bohol welcomed last Thursday, Sept. 17, the first chartered flight from Indonesia, with 56 passengers arriving at the Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA). From Denpasar, Indonesia, the flight went to Panglao before proceeding to Jakarta, Indonesia. According to airport authorities, the plane arrived at BPIA at 12:26 p.m. and departed at 2:03 p.m. The flight was confirmed by CAAP Manager Angelo Ibanez and Aviation Police Deputy Chief PLt. Melinda Basalo. The new charter route is expected to increase air connectivity, tourism and travel opportunities between Bohol and Indonesia, including more visitor arrivals and tourism-related activities.
Vice-Mayor Bajao now sits as new mayor of Duero
Vice-Mayor Hernes Bajao has now assumed office as municipal mayor of Duero, after the transfer of leadership in the town. At the start of his term, Bajao called on employees of the local government and Duerohanons to remain united and continue serving the people. Bajao replaced former Mayor Al Taculad, who stepped down from his post after the decision of the Office of the Ombudsman in the case he was facing. Before the leadership transfer, Taculad bid farewell to employees of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Duero. Bajao also encouraged Duerohanons to work together for continued service and progress of the town during the new chapter of local leadership. Bajao, who was former vice mayor, assumed the mayorship through succession, while De Asis assumed the vice mayorship. The leadership transition followed the dismissal by the Office of the Ombudsman of Taculad from government service in connection with the cases he was facing. In his farewell to LGU Duero employees, Taculad said he left office with a peaceful heart and trusted the new officials to continue public service. According to Taculad, even if leadership changes, his love and service for Duero will continue. There is now a vacant position in the Sangguniang Bayan of Duero after the succession of duties of the leaders of the said town.
Bohol cleaned in 41st Coastal Cleanup
Barangays, local governments, national agencies and private groups in Bohol cleaned coasts, rivers and waterways on Sept. 19, for the 41st International Coastal Cleanup. Coastal areas, esteros and other places that could be pathways of trash to the sea were cleaned simultaneously. The DENR led the activity together with local government units, private groups and communities. In Bohol, volunteers were sent to their assigned cleanup areas to collect and segregate trash, especially marine litter. Recyclables collected will be turned over to local programs and partner organizations for recovery and recycling. The aim of the cleanup is to reduce trash in the oceans and encourage communities to manage their waste more properly.
VG Besas: Justice must leave no one behind
Justice must be fair and everyone must be given equal opportunity so that no one is left behind in development, said Vice Gov. Nicanor Besas Jr. during the 26th annual convention and seminar of the Metropolitan and City Judges Association of the Philippines (MetCJAP) in Panglao, Bohol. Besas emphasized “Green Justice,” or justice that also looks after environmental protection. According to him, it is important that Bohol’s development continues while protecting the environment, in line with the province’s Strategic Governance Roadmap. Besas thanked MetCJAP for choosing Bohol as venue for their 26th annual convention. He also represented Gov. Aris Aumentado during the event. Judges from various metropolitan and city courts attended the seminar and discussions.
31-year-old ‘bone therapist’ nabbed in Loay buy-bust, P24K shabu seized
A 31-year-old bone alignment therapist landed in jail after being arrested in an anti-illegal drug buy-bust operation by police early this morning, on September 20, in Purok Mahogany, Barangay Las Salinas Norte, town of Loay. Packages of suspected shabu estimated to be worth almost P24,000 were recovered from the suspect’s possession. The said operation was conducted by the Loay Municipal Drug Enforcement Team (MDET) under the leadership of Police Lieutenant Jhon Rey Olid, the Officer-in-Charge of the station, past 1:35 in the morning. To ensure that proper legal process was followed, the operation and the inventory of seized evidence were witnessed by a representative from the media and two barangay officials. The suspect was also informed of his rights under the Constitution during the arrest. The suspect is now in custody at the Loay Municipal Police Station while the case to be filed against him for violation of Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 is being prepared. The seized evidence will be subjected to laboratory examination. The Loay MDET also reiterated that their strict campaign against illegal drugs continues through orderly and evidence-based operations.
