PSFI, Tagb forge alliance for mangrove protection
The Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc. (PSFI) and the Tagbilaran City Government forged a pact to join their respective forces for mangrove protection, according to a report from the City Media Bureau.
The PSFI is the social arm of the Shell Companies in the country, and it is partnering with the City Government to undertake projects that will protect the mangroves in the city.
One of the projects will start in the coastal area of barangay Taloto where the PSFI will launch various initiatives geared to help the people in the area.
The foundation will provide entrepreneurship training to 40 individuals, where the goal is to create two (2) livelihood groups in the said barangay.
The next project is the upskilling of the beneficiaries via Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) courses.
About 20 beneficiaries are expected to obtain TESDA accreditation, the report adds.
The centerpiece project of the said environmental advocacy is the mangrove planting project where 1,000 mangrove seedlings will be planted in the coast of barangay Taloto.
The PSFI will help the city government to build 10 Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) which will be placed in some barangays in the city. There will also be a training on Vermi-Composting, the same report mentions.
The said programs aim to empower the community to take ownership and responsibility in protecting their natural resource, the report from the City Media Bureau reveals.
The City Government of Tagbilaran is asking the public to protect mangroves in their respective communities to help sustain the city’s coastal resources.
City Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO) Cesar Pelaez said that sustaining a healthy mangrove ecosystem is essential in preserving the natural habitat of marine and migratory bird species.

“Planting mangroves keeps our coastal zones and shorelines healthy. It prevents erosion and protects coastal communities from storm surges and strong waves,” Pelaez said. (Note: I asked Febe Ingkig sa City and she said na Pelaez)

Mangrove forests are essential in reviving the quality of water bodies. Numerous studies reveal that mangrove forests provide a natural refuge and habitat to wildlife and serve as a natural defense against typhoons, sea-level rise, and tides.
Mangroves form low-lying thickets that hug the shore of coastal areas in tropical regions around the world. They serve as natural barriers that help dissipate swelling storm surges, the report says.
