LTO backs suggestion to hike traffic violation fines

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) backed the suggestion from the public to increase the fines imposed by local government units (LGU) as traffic violation fines.

This way the motorists will become more disciplined and make the roads safer.

LTO Tagbilaran chief Yvonne Auza said she supports the idea of increasing the fines and penalties imposed by LGU to those who violate traffic rules and regulations.

She said, an increase in fines and penalties is possible just like what happened in the joint administrative order where fines imposed on colorum vans were increased from P6,000 to P200,000.

The new fine for colurom jeeps is P50,000 and for buses is P1 million.

Auza said that because of the hefty fines, the number of colorum vehicles who ply the streets declined in number.

She urged the LGU to look into the possibility of increasing the fines and penalties for violating traffic rules and regulations.

She said there is a need to amend some ordinances in order to impose stiffer penalties on coming traffic violations such as not wearing of helmet and driving without proper licenses and documents, among others.

Due to the amount of the fines imposed on these violations, erring motorists are not intimidated and would often violate the law.
