Solon pushes for better ties between state-run colleges, private institutions

First Cong. Edgar Chatto is pushing for better ties between the state-funded colleges and private educational institutions in order to achieve greater advancements in the provision of quality education to students.

Chatto made the statement as the Bohol Island State University (BISU) Balilihan Campus held its graduation on Tuesday morning, July 12, 2022.

“In complementarily, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, thus, state-funded schools must be in partnership with the private educational institutions in providing quality educational services,” he stated.

As the only state university in Bohol, BISU is encouraged to offer courses not being provided by existing private colleges and universities.

Chatto was the one who authored Republic Act 9722 creating BISU.

The first district solon also worked for the establishment of the BISU Balilihan campus, the opening of a BISU College of Medicine in Tagbilaran City and the expansion of technology facilities in Bingag, Dauis.

The BISU Board of Regents and the Provincial Development Council (PDC) have favorably endorsed the establishment of the BISU Tourism and Sports Institute to be based at the BISU Balilihan campus.

In support of this expansion, BISU represented by OIC President and CHED-7 Regional Director Dr. Maura Consolacion Cristobal and Central Visayas MEGA Development Foundation represented by Tomas “Boy” Socias signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the purchase of the additional one hectare lot in on top of the earlier purchased lot with an area of five hectares.

Thus, the total area of six hectares is to be alloted for the BISU Tourism and Sports Institute and Multimedia Center in Balilihan.

Chatto and Senator Sonny Angara facilitated funds for facility that will include a training hotel and a Palarong Pambansa-ready sports complex.

Earlier, the local government unit (LGU)-Balilihan donated two hectares of land to BISU Balilihan. The lot now houses the Administrative Building, several classroom buildings, and the new multipurpose covered court.

GRADUATES

About 213 students who took the courses of BS Computer Science, BS Information Technology, BS Electrical Technology, BS Industrial Technology Major in Food Preparation, and BS Industrial Technology Major in Garments Technology at the BISU Balilihan graduated in rites held on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, outstanding graduates from public and private schools continue to receive academic and leadership excellence awards from Chatto.

Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner and BISU Board of Regents Chairman Dr. Jo Mark Libre, BISU Balilihan Campus Director Dr. Arceli Hernando, Zamboanga Polytechnic State University President Dr. Nelson Cabral, Balilihan Mayor Pureza Veloso-Chatto were on hand during the said event at BISU Balilihan campus.
