The Baji Arts Collective Group, a group of Boholana artists, showcased their talents and advocacies in a week-long art exhibit and launching of a women’s organization at the Island City Mall Activity Center.
The event, entitled Desiderata, opened on Sunday, March 5, and featured various artworks made by local female artists. The exhibit aimed to promote women empowerment and appreciation of Bohol’s culture and heritage.
One of the highlights of the event was the official launching of the Bohol Purple Women Association (BPWA), a province-wide non-government organization that focuses on marketing Ubi, a purple yam that is endemic to Bohol, to Boholanos and empowering local women farmers and food manufacturers.
According to BPWA president Maria Lourdes Maglente, Ubi is not only a source of income but also a symbol of resilience and strength for Boholanas. “Ubi is our pride. It survived calamities and pests. It nourished us during hard times. It represents our identity as Boholanos,” she said.
Maglente added that BPWA aims to help women in rural areas by providing them with training, equipment, and market linkages for Ubi production. She also invited other women to join their organization and support their cause.
The art exhibit and BPWA launching were part of the celebration of Women’s Month in Bohol, an island province in the Central Visayas region known for its natural attractions such as the Chocolate Hills, Tarsier Conservation Area, Danao Adventure Park, and Pandanon Island.
Desiderata will run until March 11 at the Island City Mall Activity Center. Admission is free.
