CONG. EDGAR CHATTO

“Technology should create positive change. Technology should provide
avenue for better communication so that we can build societies, not destroy
communities or persons, Cong. Edgar Chatto said when asked by media
about proliferation of fake news and accounts intending to destroy his
character and reputation.
In the press conference Chatto granted at the request of local media, he
expressed concern for the youth and the Boholano community as a whole in
what he described as a landscape of normalizing fake news and destroying
characters on social media.
Chatto, being the subject of disinformation, said it is not only his concern but a
concern of the community especially in terms of the danger of normalizing the
culture.
He emphasized that the Boholano community as a whole, including
mainstream media, must find ways to prevent the abuse of social media.
The first district representative further said a legal team is studying available
data to pursue appropriate action against baseless attacks on his person, and
even towards his family.
He explained that any move on his part to fight disinformation does not only
concern him but more so towards addressing the challenge of ensuring that
the use of social media is kept appropriate and within the norms of conduct.
The discipline in the use of social media is what is important, he said as he
pointed out the clearly politically motivated attacks or advancement of
business interests, while underscoring that his governance has been
consistently rooted in transparency, accountability and participation.
As then governor, Chatto held weekly media reporting, institutionalized the
internal audit office at the Capitol, strengthened multi-sectoral decision
making, among others, when he was then governor.
