Polycystic Ovaries

This condition is also known as the Stein Leventhal Syndrome. 
Patients 

with this condition will manifest the following;- obesity
– Hirsutism
– and secondary Amenorrhea with enlarged polycystic ovaries (bilateral).

Onset may occur at puberty with menstrual irregularities and hirsutism as the early 

complaints; the later, in the reproductive years, there would be anovulatory infertility.
The cause of this disorder is still not clear but experts say that it is a heterogenous 

condition that may be associated with :- 21 hydroxylase deficiency
– deficiency of 3beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and
– deficiency of ovarian 17- ketoreductase .

The optimal method of treatment of PCOS consist of ovarian suppression by the 

contraceptive pill.
