A 50-year-old man was shot dead by police after he allegedly pointed a gun at them in Buenavista, Bohol on Monday evening.

According to a press release by PCPT Edcel Delgado Petecio, OIC of Buenavista MPS, the police received a report that the suspect, whose name was withheld, was in possession of an unknown caliber of firearm while at the lawn tennis court in Poblacion, Buenavista.

Police responded to the report and approached the suspect in a courteous manner. However, the suspect ran away and drew his firearm at the police. PCPT Petecio fired his issued firearm at the suspect in self-defense, hitting him on his left pelvic part of his body.

The suspect was rushed to Dagohoy Community Hospital in Inabanga, Bohol and later transferred to Cecilio Gallares Provincial Hospital in Tagbilaran City, Bohol by the police aboard an LGU ambulance. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital by Dr. Jairus Ire R. de Lira, MD.

Police recovered from the suspect one unit of cal.45 with markings COLT automatic caliber 45 with serial number 726192 loaded with live ammunition and one piece of cal. 45 magazine inserted with five live ammunitions. The suspect was informed of his constitutional rights before he died and appropriate charges were being prepared against him.

The firearm and ammunition recovered from the suspect were turned over by the investigator to the Bohol Provincial Forensic Unit in Camp Dagohoy, Tagbilaran City for ballistic examination.

The police are still investigating the motive and background of the suspect and whether he was involved in any criminal activities. The police also appealed to the public to report any suspicious persons or activities in their area to prevent any untoward incidents.
