Pres. CPG’s grandson cites road name as beacon of hope for Bohol’s youth

In a heartfelt tribute to his grandfather, Caloy Campos, the grandson of the late President Carlos P. Garcia, has extended his appreciation to the Bohol local government for the honor bestowed upon his family.

The Bohol Circumferential Road, a vital artery that serves as the lifeline of the island, connecting disparate communities and facilitating economic growth, now bears the name of the esteemed former president.

During a recent phone interview on the popular DYTR program ‘Newsmakers ug Uban Pa,’ hosted by Ardy Araneta-Batoy, Campos expressed his profound gratitude.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Governor Erico Aristotle ‘Aris’ Aumentado and our esteemed congressmen for this significant gesture. Renaming the circumferential road in memory of my grandfather, Carlos P. Garcia, is not just an honor for our family but a beacon of inspiration for Bohol’s youth,” Campos remarked.

“May this serve as a perpetual reminder of his enduring legacy, his leadership through the trials of World War II, his political journey, and his pivotal role in the Constitutional Convention of 1970.”

The Bohol Circumferential Road, spanning 260.25 kilometers and designated as N850, is more than just a transportation route; it’s a symbol of unity and progress.

Last year, Rep. Vanessa Aumentado filed a bill in Congress to rename Pres. CPG road to Erico Aumentado Highway, drawing public criticisms.

Critics said the move to rename CPG Road to Aumentado Highway is a “very selfish act,” adding that the act is “wallowing in self-glorification” at the expense of public funds.

The road connects Tagbilaran City to Trinidad and back, weaving through the heart of the island and linking its history with its future.

The legacy of President Garcia is further immortalized in various landmarks across the region, including CPG Park, CPG Avenue, and other notable sites named in his honor. These serve as tangible reminders of his contributions to the nation and the province of Bohol.

In collaboration with the National Museum, led by Director-General Jeremy Barnes, Campos is also involved in curating an exhibit dedicated to President Garcia.

Slated to open on November 4, 2024, coinciding with the commemorative CPG Day, the exhibit at the National Museum-Bohol branch will showcase a collection of President Garcia’s memorabilia, offering a window into the life and times of one of Bohol’s most distinguished sons.

This initiative not only honors the memory of President Garcia but also provides an educational platform for the younger generation to connect with their heritage, Campos said.

As the Campos family prepares to inaugurate the exhibit on CPG Day, they carry with them the hope that it will enlighten and inspire future leaders to emulate the values and vision of President Garcia, the statement reads.
