BISU School of Medicine Celebrates 3 Years of Excellence: A Dream Realized

In the heart of Bohol, a medical marvel is unfolding. The Bohol Island State University School of Medicine (BISU-SOM) is celebrating a milestone – its third year of cultivating excellence in medical education, research, and academic leadership.

The journey began with a vision, one that was shared by Former Gov. & Cong. Edgar Chatto, who initiated the opening of a School of Medicine in Bohol. Chatto’s vision was met with support from HNU Pres Fr Dudz Lero & UB Pres Ryan Tirol who were one in endorsing BISU to host the Medical School while the Private Universities and Colleges manifested their support by strengthening the pre-med courses in their respective Institutions.

Then, BISU Pres Regucivilla Pobar took the challenge and organized the team to work on papers for the approval of BISU BOT and CHED. Gov Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Hospital then became the partner training hospital under Dr Mutya Macuno and now with Medical Center Chief Dr. Miguel Mike Jayoma who was also the Guest Speaker during SOM’s 3rd Anniversary Celebration.

Today, BISU-SOM is a thriving institution, with a faculty complement that has grown from 2 to 35 members. The school has achieved remarkable milestones, including a Top 7 national ranking in Medical Biochemistry and advancing to the semi-finals of an international Medical Physiology Competition.

“We look forward to our first batch of doctors in the very near future, a realization of another dream and thought as BISU’s contribution to Bohol’s growth,” Chatto said in a statement.

BISU Pres. Dr. Anthony Penaso and School of Medicine Dean Marvie Durbandi expressed their gratitude to Chatto for his initiative. “The private universities and colleges manifested their support by strengthening the pre-med courses in their respective institutions,” Penaso said.

Dean Durbandi reported that the first batch of medical students will soon start their hospital internship at Gallares Tagbilaran Hospital. This internship will be a declaration of the school’s commitment to producing competent doctors who will strengthen Bohol’s healthcare system.

BISU-SOM’s achievements are proofs of the power of collaboration and vision. The school has produced two international publications in Scopus-indexed Q1 journals and has hosted the National Convention of the Philippine Association of Academic Biochemists.

Dr. Meysam Hamel Darbandi, Vice President of the Philippine Association of Academic Biochemists (PAAB), is proud to be part of this journey who believes that BISU SOM is showing an exceptional achievement for a newly established medical school.

As BISU-SOM continues to flourish, it’s clear that this institution is not just training doctors – it’s shaping the future of healthcare in Bohol and beyond.

Bohol Light educates consumers on grid alerts

Bohol Light, a distribution utility managed and operated by Primelectric Holdings Inc., educates consumers on the effects of grid alerts issued by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

The company said the grid alerts may impact the cost of getting electricity and the effects may be reflected in the bill, said Sheryl Paga, spokesperson of Bohol Light.

The cost of providing power may change in the coming months because of the limited supply of electricity, she said.

The short supply may affect the generation cost, she added.

Paga said it is evident that rising power costs impact households, businesses, and the entire community, and she advised consumers to use electricity wisely.

More power is often used during the dry season and it is prudent to observe energy-saving tips.

Paga recommended the prudent use of appliances in order to cushion the cost of electricity reflected on the bill.

Moreover, when there are yellow and red alerts issued by the NGCP, distribution utilities may be forced to conduct manual load dropping to save the grid.

The power distributors will determine the areas affected by manual load dropping and those areas will effectively lose power momentarily.

Paga explains that this is the reason behind emergency power interruptions.

Bohol Light asks for understanding as we all are impacted by the crisis.

Bohol Light is continuously monitoring the status of the electricity supply and is coordinating for the efficient purchase of electricity from power generators to cushion any negative impact on consumers.

Bohol Light is committed to provide reliable and just power and service to consumers.

The company is constantly updating the public on any updates related to electricity.

Meanwhile, Bohol Light has new contact numbers starting tomorrow, said Paga.

Bohol Light can be contacted at 038 515 2370 up to 2375 or 0917 557 6120, or send a message to the official Messenger account, or check the official Facebook page of Bohol Light, or visit the official website http://www.boholpower.ph.

BWUI’s wash caravan reaches Cabawan

The Water Sanitation and Health (WASH) caravan of Bohol Water Utilities Inc. (BWUI) has reached Barangay Cabawan, said Victor Tambis, company spokesman.

The aim of the caravan is to expand water services to all sectors of society.

The company started the caravan in Barangay Cogon and this time the caravan has reached Cabawan.

The caravan was launched in Cogon on April 15, 2026 where several consumers were able to get water connections.

After a month, the caravan was launched in Cabawan and it started on May 26, 2026, and the orientation was held on June 1, 2026.

Consumers who wish to get water connections are encouraged to take advantage of the program, especially those located along the water line.

The water line is from the barangay hall up to Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School Senior High School campus via Sunshine Road.

The water line is also from the barangay hall to corner JA Clarin and Lacosta Street to San Isidro Elementary School.

The hope is that these consumers will get connections, especially those without formal connections, and the applicant may be connected without paying upfront fees.

Consumers may pay the fees and any installation costs can be paid on an instalment basis and charged to their bill.

Next is Barangay Tiptip and then Barangay San Isidro.

Capitol supports DOLE PEAO congress

Gov. Aris Aumentado attended on June 4, 2026 the Congress led by Regional Director Roy Buenafe, DOLE Bohol chief Vivencio Lagahid, and Kim Francisco of PESO 7.

The Congress gathered PESO managers across the region.

The members of the PESO Managers Association of the Philippines (MAP) held an assessment and developed services directly benefitting people to gain employment.

Aumentado thanked the help of the agency in the goal that each family has one member that is gainfully employed.

The launch of 20,000 jobs provides support to job seekers in Bohol.

The Capitol is hopeful that the PESO managers can help address the needs for more employment.

The PESO is the arm of the government that links jobseekers with employers.

Often, the PESO conducts job fairs where jobseekers can find suitable employment.

House panel okays BISU tourism, sports institute bill

The House Committee on Higher and Technical Education has approved House Bill 8875 or the Bohol Island State University (BISU) Tourism and Sports Institute based in Balilihan.

This is according to Murang Kuryente partylist representative Arthur Yap.

Yap announced the news on social media.

He said the institute opens several opportunities to Bohol in terms of education, tourism, and sports.

The new facility is hosted by Balilihan.

The said institute is a brainchild of former Cong. Edgar Chatto and was seen as a huge project while he was in office.

Yap took the cudgels and continued the project.

The institute will bring tourism education to Bohol and will also provide sporting facilities to athletes and sports scholars.

The institute is going to rise on a prime lot in Balilihan.

Bohol approves new anti-rabies ordinance after 19 years; establishes bantay rabies sa barangay system

Bohol has approved on third and final reading in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Bohol a proposed provincial ordinance that revises the more than 19-year-old anti-rabies policy in the province, as part of strengthening the campaign against rabies.

It was approved during the regular session last Tuesday, May 26, presided by Vice-Governor Nicanor Besas and with Senior Board Member Tita Baja as the floor leader.

The provincial ordinance authored and sponsored by Board Member Mutya Kismet Tirol is known as Provincial Ordinance No. 05-2026, which aims to strengthen the implementation of rabies prevention and eradication programs in Bohol.

One of the biggest changes in the new ordinance is the establishment of “Bantay Rabies sa Barangay” “Bantay Rabies sa Barangay” “Barangay Rabies Watch”, a community-based mechanism that will serve as the frontline structure for implementing anti-rabies measures at the barangay level.

It is expected to strengthen monitoring, coordination, and implementation of policies against rabies in the entire community.

The ordinance is in line with the mandate of the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007, which mandates local governments to implement a comprehensive and continuous program against rabies, including mass vaccination of dogs, responsible pet ownership, and continuous information campaign to raise public awareness.

According to the provincial ordinance, monitoring of pet owners will be stricter through mandatory registration, regular vaccination compliance, and responsible care of pets.

The BRB will also report violations, monitor compliance, and recommend appropriate action against those who do not follow the ordinance.

The Office of the Provincial Veterenarian (OPV) and the Office of the Provincial Agriculture (OPA) will lead the implementation.

After approval, it will be forwarded to the Office of the Governor for signing by Governor Aris Aumentado so that it will fully become a provincial law and be implemented.

Tagbilaran crime rate falls 40% in second quarter of 2026

Overall crime incidents in Tagbilaran City dropped 40.30 percent in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, the city’s top police official reported Wednesday.

Tagbilaran City Police Station chief Lt. Col. Joey Mallare Bicoy presented the figures during the second-quarter joint meeting of the City Peace and Order Council and City Anti-Drug Abuse Council, chaired by Mayor Jane Yap.

Police data showed total crime incidents fell from 134 cases recorded between March 12 and May 26, 2025, to 80 cases over the same period this year. Index crimes, or the eight focus crimes tracked by police, dropped 57.90 percent, from 19 cases to eight.

No murders or homicides were recorded in either comparative period.

Physical injury cases fell from eight to one, theft cases from eight to four, and rape cases from three to two.

Bicoy said the city police would sustain its anti-crime and anti-drug campaigns to maintain the downward trend.

DENR launches probe into viral video of Bohol’s Napaling Reef

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-CENRO Tagbilaran has launched an urgent investigation into a viral video that allegedly shows coral damage at Napaling Reef, a protected marine area in Bohol.

The controversy erupted after vlogger Anna Gumiran of “Queen’s Escape” posted the video on May 24, drawing public calls for an official explanation from the DENR.

Bohol Governor Aris Aumentado also expressed concern over the reef’s condition and ordered an immediate inquiry.

A local resident, however, disputed Gumiran’s claims, saying the post was baseless and that the reef remained healthy.

The resident attributed the damaged portions shown in the video to a powerful typhoon that struck the area last year, which dislodged and swept away sections of coral, and not to neglect or mismanagement.

The vlogger faced public backlash from residents of the area following the post.

The local resident said the situation could have been avoided had Gumiran consulted locals before publishing the video, warning that spreading unverified information could damage the area’s image and tourism prospects.

Saint Peter Crematorium agrees to one-time drug burning in Tagbilaran

Saint Peter Chapel and Crematorium has agreed to allow its facility to be used once for the destruction of seized illegal drugs, but has ruled out any future use for the same purpose.

The offer came during a regular session of the Tagbilaran City Council on Wednesday, where crematorium manager Anabella Sotto appeared alongside Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Bohol Provincial Officer Jordan Lunesa to discuss the possibility of conducting court-ordered drug destructions locally instead of transporting confiscated substances to Cebu.

The issue was raised by Councilor Fausto Budlong, chairman of the city council’s Committee on Peace and Order and Public Safety, who cited concerns over public perception that seized drugs were being recycled when burned outside the province.

Saint Peter said its board of directors approved the one-time use of its crematorium for drug burning, but declined further participation, citing a desire to preserve the dignity and sanctity of the facility given that most Filipinos hold traditional values around caring for their deceased.

The crematorium urged PDEA to assist in securing a permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, as its existing permit covers only the cremation of human remains.

Lunesa welcomed the city council’s support, saying transporting seized drugs to Cebu posed security risks for PDEA personnel and entailed significant costs. He said conducting destructions locally would help strengthen public trust in the government’s anti-drug campaign.

PDEA-Bohol said it was prepared to cover any charges incurred and assist in processing the DENR permit.

The Tagbilaran City Council said it would pursue legislative action on the matter.

Green sea turtle nests for fourth time at Alona Beach in Panglao

A green sea turtle came ashore to lay eggs along Alona Beach for the fourth time, authorities said, reinforcing the area’s standing as a viable nesting ground for the protected marine species.

Officials relocated the eggs to a safer site to shield them from human activity, high tides, and other environmental threats.

The green sea turtle, known locally as pawikan, is listed as endangered under the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List and is protected under Philippine law.

The species is prized by conservationists for its role in maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reef ecosystems.

The repeated nesting activity at Alona Beach signals that the coastal environment in Panglao remains suitable for marine life, officials said.

Barangay probes death of four dogs allegedly poisoned in Tagbilaran

The barangay captain of Mansasa, Tagbilaran City said Tuesday he would look into reports that four dogs were allegedly poisoned and killed within a gated residence, though he noted no formal complaint had been filed with the barangay.

Barangay Captain Arvin Visarra told media that no blotter report had been lodged regarding the incident as of Tuesday morning.

Dog owner Johnny Ferniz said in a Facebook post on May 30 that his four pet dogs, aged 8 to 10 years, died suddenly despite being healthy and on complete supplements.

Ferniz said he suspected poison had been thrown into his fenced property and vowed to hold whoever was responsible accountable.

Visarra said the poisoning may have been carried out to facilitate a burglary, a pattern consistent with a similar incident that occurred on May 16.

The barangay captain said he would conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Bohol provincial government returns to 5-day workweek starting June 1

The Bohol provincial government resumed its regular five-day workweek Monday after Governor Aris Aumentado lifted the order that had placed employees on a compressed four-day schedule.

The shortened workweek had been implemented in compliance with a directive from the Office of the President, which called on government agencies to conserve fuel and electricity amid a global energy crisis triggered by rising tensions in the Middle East.

The return to normal working hours comes as fuel prices have eased following the ceasefire between Iran and Israel that ended the conflict which had disrupted oil supply routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, earlier this year.

The resolution of the crisis brought crude oil prices down from their wartime highs, prompting the national government to lift emergency austerity measures it had imposed on fuel and power consumption.

Aumentado’s order to revert to the standard schedule takes effect June 1, 2026.

SM Bohol project will push through — Aumentado

Bohol Governor “Aris” Aumentado on Friday assured Boholanos that the planned SM mall project in the province will push through, citing a personal commitment from SM Prime Holdings Chairman Hans Sy.

Aumentado said Sy personally informed him that the project would be completed as planned, dismissing speculation that it might not materialize.

“My fellow Boholanos, we should not worry about the SM Bohol project. According to Mr. Hans Sy, this project will definitely push through,” the governor said.

Aumentado described the development as good news for the province, saying the SM mall would generate employment, business opportunities, and increased economic activity in Bohol.

He also urged the public to remain positive and support projects aimed at advancing the province’s development.

“Let us remain positive and support projects that will help develop our province. Bohol’s progress continues,” he added.

The project is considered one of the largest investments expected to accelerate economic growth and attract additional investors to the province.

Tagbilaran City free ride program extended through June 30

The Tagbilaran City government has extended its Libreng Sakay (Free Ride) program through June 30, 2026, providing continued fare relief to commuters amid a persisting transport sector crisis.

Mayor Jane Yap announced the extension in an interview, saying the free rides on public utility jeepneys and multicabs were prolonged to help workers and students — particularly those returning to school this month — reduce their expenses while also supporting drivers’ livelihoods.

“This is a service that can be seen and felt by the people,” Yap said.

The mayor thanked the Sangguniang Panlungsod, led by Vice Mayor Adam Relson Jala, for approving the extension of the program, which was originally designed as an emergency response to the ongoing transportation crisis.

Yap also expressed gratitude to the Tagbilaran City Crisis Management Response Unit and city hall employees for their dedication in implementing the program.

The city government has allocated P5 million from its unappropriated surplus to fund the Libreng Sakay program.

3 nabbed in Baclayon drug den bust; P102k shabu seized

Three individuals were arrested during a buy-bust operation conducted by Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency operatives at a residence in Barangay Taguihon, Baclayon that was allegedly being used as a drug den, authorities said.

The primary target, Justine Bandala, 25, a carpenter and resident of Purok 7, Barangay Taguihon, was nabbed along with two alleged companions: Ryan Clifford Gilay, 27, a mason from Purok 2 of the same barangay, and Michael Hernando, 45, a loan agent from Purok 3, Barangay Landican, Baclayon.

PDEA operatives led by Agent-in-Charge Antonio Samante Jr., under the supervision of IA5 Jordan Lunesa, launched the operation after receiving information that Bandala was selling suspected shabu inside his home.

A PDEA undercover agent posing as a buyer successfully purchased one sachet of suspected shabu worth P500.

Bandala was immediately arrested upon receipt of the marked money and handover of the contraband. Gilay and Hernando were separately apprehended after being found allegedly engaged in a drug session inside the residence.

A subsequent search of Bandala’s person yielded 10 more sachets of suspected shabu. All recovered drugs combined weighed approximately 15 grams with a standard drug price of P102,000. Drug paraphernalia were also seized.

The operation was witnessed by Barangay Kagawads Arnulfo Aya-ay and Diomedes Iyog of Barangay Taguihon, Department of Justice representative Crispin Orot, and members of the media.

Bandala faces charges of illegal sale and possession of dangerous drugs, as well as maintaining a drug den. Gilay and Hernando face charges of illegal possession.

PDEA said the investigation is ongoing to determine whether other individuals are involved in the illegal activity.

Carmen TUPAD official unauthorized, beneficiary deductions probed — BPC

The Bagong Pilipinas Citizens has disowned a woman who allegedly collected fees from TUPAD beneficiaries in the municipality of Carmen, saying she was never authorized to act as its project manager, as an investigation into the matter is set before the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

Board Member Nathaniel Binlod said allegations surfaced that beneficiaries under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers program had P1,400 deducted from their honoraria.

In a letter to Binlod, BPC Lead Convenor Cyaribel B. David identified Trina Mae Solis Morala as having misrepresented herself as the organization’s project manager and laid out fees in a letter addressed to Carmen Mayor Conchita Delos Reyes.

David said Morala is only a TUPAD coordinator under PPPM, Inc. and is prohibited from collecting any fees from beneficiaries.

The BPC and the Department of Labor and Employment have reiterated that no fees are to be collected from TUPAD beneficiaries.

Morala has been warned and may face legal action, the group said.

The BPC assured that the program will continue for 100 TUPAD beneficiaries in the district.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan was set to conduct an investigation the following day to shed light on the matter.

Bus crashes in Jagna due to mechanical issue, 4 injured

A road accident happened recently past 10:00 in the evening, in Barangay Nausoc, town of Jagna, Bohol, after a Southern Star passenger bus crashed due to a sudden mechanical problem.

According to the initial investigation, the bus was coming from Tagbilaran City and was supposed to head to the town of Ubay when its steering wheel reportedly jammed, causing the driver to lose control and crash straight ahead.

It was learned that there were 11 passengers on board the bus when the incident happened.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but four (4) passengers sustained minor injuries and were immediately attended to after the unfortunate incident.

At present, the driver of the bus remains under the custody of Jagna Police Station while the police continue to conduct further investigation regarding the accident.

Suspect in carnapping caught in Tubigon after using stolen motorbike to buy gas

A 38-year-old man identified as Titong Alcantara, a resident of the town, was arrested by members of the Tubigon Municipal Police Station (MPS) after he was involved in a carnapping incident on Thursday night, May 28, 2026.

According to the police report, the operation started after the victim, Rodel Lacia Jr., a native of Sagbayan, Bohol, reported that his Motor Star Z200 Explorer motorcycle was stolen.

Based on the investigation, it was found that the motorcycle was opened with a fake key while it was parked outside the victim’s boarding house in Brgy. Centro, Tubigon.

Through an immediate hot pursuit operation by the police, the suspect was caught while about to refuel at EZ Gasoline Station located in Brgy. Macaas, Tubigon, where the stolen motorcycle was also successfully recovered.

The actual confrontation of Johnjay Justol Lacia with the suspect can also be seen in the Video sent by Jerwel, Technician Vlog of DYTR.

The suspect was then informed of his rights under the constitution and was first brought to a hospital for medical examination before being thrown into jail, where he will face appropriate charges for violating Republic Act 10883 or the Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016.

Oceanjet will implement a reduction in the temporary fuel surcharge on some routes starting June 8, 2026, following the decrease in diesel prices in the past months.

According to the company, even though fuel prices have decreased compared to previous months, they remain higher than their level before the energy crisis.

Tagbilaran police to arrest riders without standard helmets starting August

In the first week of the month of August, the police of Tagbilaran City are targeting to start arresting drivers and backriders or passengers on motorcycles who are not wearing standard protective helmets, according to a city councilor.

Councilor Fausto “Bebot” Budlong, chairman of the Committee on Peace, Public Order and Safety of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, said that 60 days were given for the Information and Education Campaign (IEC) on City Ordinance No. C-386, or the “Mandatory Use of Motorcycle Helmet Ordinance” “Mandatory Use of Motorcycle Helmet Ordinance”.

Budlong said that the two-month duration of the information drive agreed upon by Mayor Jane Yap and Tagbilaran City Chief of Police, http://Lt.Col Joey Mallare Bicoy is enough time to buy the right kind of helmet allowed by law before it is fully implemented.

The Tagbilaran City Police Station (TCPS) led by Bicoy already started last week in warning and teaching motorists the correct kind of helmet to wear.

Budlong called on drivers and backriders of motorcycles to follow the ordinance because its goal is to protect the lives of motorists and reduce injuries and deaths due to road accidents.

The helmet must have a Philippine Standard (PS) mark or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) issued by the Bureau of Product Standards (BPS).

Under the ordinance that is in line with Republic Act No. 10054 or also known as the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009, violators may be fined up to Php5,000 or as determined by the court.

Within the months of June and July, there will be no arrests yet of drivers and backriders of motorcycles who are not wearing standard protective helmets.

Based on data from the Tagbilaran City Police Station, there were 153 motorcycle-related traffic accidents recorded in Tagbilaran City from January 2025 to March 2026, where most of these accidents involved motorcycles.

Murder case filed against suspect who killed Clarin kagawad

The police of Clarin town filed a murder case before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office last day against the lone suspect who shot and killed Barangay Kagawad Marino Montojo, 35 years old, in Barangay Caluwasan.

This was revealed by Police Master Sergeant Peter Peting.

However, PMSgt. Peting first refused to disclose the real name of the suspect while the legal process is ongoing.

According to him, the CCTV footage obtained helped a lot in identifying the lone suspect.

It can be recalled that Kagawad Montojo was shot dead on May 24 right across the town slaughterhouse of Clarin.

After the shooting, the suspect simply boarded a getaway motorcycle and quickly fled from where the crime happened.

Even though the killer covered his face, wore a long-sleeve shirt, and a cap, he was still quickly identified by the police with the help of CCTV.

The footage shows that the suspect was already waiting outside the gate of the slaughterhouse.

As the victim came out riding his motorcycle, the suspect suddenly approached and shot him directly in the head, which caused his instant death.

Bohol farmers start planting after rains

Some farmers in the towns of Loboc, Bilar, Batuan, and Carmen have already started planting after experiencing continuous rain in those areas.

This was confirmed by Acting Provincial Agriculturist Larry Pamugas in an interview with the media.

According to Pamugas, the rice fields planted now are relying only on rainwater for now.

It is expected that farmers who planted in May will be able to harvest their yield or reap their harvest in the upcoming month of August.

To help other farmers, Pamugas announced that the release of water from Malinao Dam and Bayungan Dam in San Miguel is expected this week.

This irrigation water will go to the rice fields in the towns of Pilar, San Miguel, Dagohoy, and Ubay.

On the other hand, the official admitted that there are still no plantings in the second district of Bohol because they have not yet been visited by strong rain, unlike the favorable situation in Loboc, Bilar, Batuan, and Carmen.

Because of this, Pamugas urged farmers in areas that have not yet been visited by rain to prepare their fields in advance.

This is so that when heavy rain pours, they can plant immediately and directly.

Provincial Gov’t.  to sign MOA with Bohol Light and BOHECO to expand CCTV network

The Provincial Government of Bohol will prepare a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the power distribution utilities (DUs) to continue and expand the use of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras for monitoring security and disasters in the province.

According to Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Head Anthony Damalerio, the agreement will allow the Capitol’s CCTV cameras to connect to the power line of Bohol Light Company and Bohol Electric Cooperative (BOHECO) through their posts and facilities.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) discussed and included in the plan the addition of equipment such as Power-over-Ethernet (POE) switches, bullet-type CCTV cameras, LiteBeam wireless transmitters, and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras to further expand the surveillance coverage of the province.

The PDRRMC also requested that the DUs consider free use of electricity for CCTV units that will be used to monitor crime and emergencies.

However, according to the representatives of the DUs, they usually use the flat-rate billing system for equipment directly connected to their line and operating 24 hours a day.

It was also explained that a similar policy is used by other local government units in their streetlight projects, so free electricity consumption is not immediately possible.

Because of this, Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte, following the order of Governor Aris Aumentado, ordered that the agreement between the Capitol and the DUs be done through a formal MOA so that the responsibilities and payments related to the operation of the CCTV system are clear.

Tagbilaran SP asks St. Peter for annual burning of seized drugs

The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Tagbilaran formally requested St. Peter Chapel and Crematorium to implement an annual permanent burning of seized illegal drugs within Bohol to strengthen transparency and public trust in the campaign against illegal drugs.

Through Proposed Resolution No. 184-26 approved during the regular session on June 1, 2026, the council asked the Board of Directors of St. Peter to hold the activity at least once every year.

The resolution, sponsored by Councilor Fausto “Bebot” Budlong and with Acting Vice Mayor Jose Floro Ringca presiding over the session, aims to create a local and regular system for burning drug evidence instead of sending it to Cebu for disposal.

According to the council, this will help address public concerns about the transportation and handling of confiscated drugs, while also strengthening the chain of custody and preventing possible tampering or diversion of contraband.

The resolution recognized St. Peter as a suitable partner because of its modern cremation facilities that can safely and permanently burn illegal substances in line with environmental and public safety standards.

The operation will be done under coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), police and other concerned agencies.

According to the council, the annual burning of seized drugs within Bohol will provide additional assurance that illegal drugs are completely destroyed and will no longer return to circulation.

Copies of the approved resolution will be sent to the President and Board of Directors of St. Peter Funeral Homes, to Mayor Jane C. Yap, and to the relevant government agencies for their appropriate action.

P250k reward now offered for capture of Clarin kagawad murder suspect

Governor Aris Aumentado offered P200,000 reward to anyone who can give information that will help identify and capture the suspect in the killing of Barangay Kagawad Marino Aden Montojo in the town of Clarin.

Montojo was shot dead by a lone gunman after he came out of a slaughterhouse in Clarin last Sunday, according to the police investigation.

Based on footage from CCTV cameras near the crime scene, the suspect covered his face and wore sunglasses and a cap to avoid being identified.

Investigators also learned that the gunman immediately fled after the shooting and boarded a motorcycle driven by another companion.

Before the reward offered by the governor, the Local Government Unit of Clarin had earlier offered P50,000 reward for information that will help in the arrest of the suspect, which is why the total reward money is now P250,000.

Governor Aumentado is also personally monitoring the investigation as chairman of the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) while the police operation continues to identify and arrest those responsible for the crime.

Getafe port expansion seen to boost Bohol economy

The Getafe Port Expansion Project of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is expected to have a big impact on the economy, transportation, and investment in the province after Governor Aris Aumentado inspected it.

According to the Governor, developing ports is not only for better travel service but also a big step to open more business opportunities and attract investors to Bohol.

Aumentado explained that if ports are modern, comfortable, and efficient, more ships will enter the province, which can lead to faster movement of products, growth of businesses, and creation of more jobs for Boholanos.

He added that strengthening infrastructure like ports is important to improve Bohol’s connection to other places and boost tourism and commerce.

The Governor also thanked the officials of the Philippine Ports Authority, especially GM Jay Santiago and Assistant General Manager James Gantalao, for their continued support and efforts to improve the ports in the province.

Bohol rice supply good for only 169 days as El Niño nears

Bohol province faces a possible shortage of rice after agriculture authorities warned that the current rice stock may only last 169 days, or up to 200 days with strict conservation, due to the intensifying El Niño.

Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Larry Pamugas revealed this situation during the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council meeting, and he urged immediate steps to extend the food supply as the province prepares for the dry season.

According to the forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), El Niño is expected to begin in June, and sea surface temperature will rise from 0.5°C to 1.5°C in early 2027, which could mean a severe event.

Officials said that even a small increase in temperature can disrupt global weather patterns, which can bring drought to some areas and heavy rain to others.

Adding to the risk in Bohol is the rise in the price of agricultural inputs due to global supply pressure, which will affect farm production.

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has already adjusted the planting schedule to take advantage of the remaining rain, but warned that water may still be insufficient if the drought lasts.

Based on provincial data, Bohol needs 457,282 kilos of rice per day.

After production and milling adjustments, the net supply is 95,455 metric tons, which is equivalent to 170–200 days of supply.

Of the 52,595 hectares that can be irrigated, only about 10% will be reliable if the drought continues.

The provincial government is planning additional measures with national agencies as the impact of El Niño intensifies.

Through the Special Education Fund of the Provincial School Board, each delegate was also given ₱4,500 financial assistance to support their participation in the national games.

The delegation’s success shows the province’s continued investment in education, sports development, and building the capacity of the youth.

Panglao house burglarized; suspect arrested

A thief broke into a house owned by the Estoquia family in Purok 2, Poblacion, town of Panglao last May 30, past 2:00 in the afternoon.

According to Kim Glory Rose Estoquia’s interview with DYTR NEWS, she was inside the house at around 2:20 p.m. but was taking a bath, while the house was open.

Kim did not notice that the suspect had already entered and quickly gathered the jewelry and cellphones, including iPhones.

After the theft, the suspect still traveled to the town of Jagna supposedly to ride a ship bound for Cagayan de Oro but it did not push through.

On the morning of May 31, the suspect returned to Panglao near Cristal E College because he had left some bags in that area.

It was learned that the suspect even bought a luggage worth 4,000 pesos using money from the ring he pawned that he stole from the house.

Since the suspect’s face went viral and was already posted on social media, some boarders in that area recognized him.

To prevent him from escaping, the boarders kept him entertained and talked with the suspect while waiting for authorities.

When the patrol car of the Panglao Police Station arrived, the suspect tried to get in to ride.

He was instead let on board by the Panglao PNP personnel but was directly brought to the police station.

Upon arrival at the station, two magazines with live ammunition and silver paraphernalia were recovered from the suspect.

The stolen cellphones were also returned to the owner, while the wedding ring that the suspect pawned at an M Lhuillier branch is still set to be redeemed and retrieved by the victims.

The suspect was identified as Randy Saldia Adante, a native of Cambarol, Dimiao, Bohol.

Further investigation also revealed that he had already victimized other houses in the town of Dimiao last February.

As of now, the suspect is detained at the lock-up jail of the Panglao Municipal Police Station and is set to be charged with the proper case today, June 1.

Four dogs die from poisoning in Tagbilaran; owner calls for justice, netizen warns owner of theft

A “Fur Dad” is now calling for justice after his four pet dogs were successively poisoned and died right inside their fenced compound in Mansasa, Tagbilaran City.

According to the account of owner Johnny Ferniz through a chat conversation with the media, the first incident happened last May 16, 2026, and was followed a few days later which caused the death of his four pets.

Ferniz was greatly surprised and saddened because their house has a fence and the dogs really could not get out, which is why he strongly suspects that poison was thrown at his pets from outside.

For now, the problem is the lack of evidence because there is no CCTV footage in that area, but Ferniz is determined to report the incident to their barangay so that whoever is behind the ugly act can be made to answer and be punished.

Amid the incident, the public also expressed concern and warning to Ferniz after the news spread on social media.

One concerned netizen commented and warned that this could possibly be a sign of an upcoming theft in their area.

According to the netizen, he also experienced a similar situation before where their dogs were first poisoned, and a few days later, their house was broken into and robbed.

House in carmen burned down in fire

A house made of light materials burned down in Sitio Purok 5, Lower Maasin, Barangay El Salvador, town of Carmen in the evening of May 29, 2026.

According to the report from FO3 Ian Blare Reyes, the investigator of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Carmen, they received the fire alarm at around 9:40 p.m.

Because of the fire in the area and since the location is mountainous, the firefighters reached the place at 10:21 p.m. where the structure was already completely burned down.

In the video taken by Kapitan Jun Estorosas of El Salvador, the severe burning of the house can be seen when they responded to it.

The house is owned by Marcial Loremia.

In the initial interview of authorities with a witness, it was learned that the fire suddenly started from the kitchen area.

There was no one inside the house when the incident happened, which is why it was declared totally damaged and not a single item was salvaged by the owner.

A deeper investigation is still ongoing to determine the real cause of the outbreak of fire.

Capitol returns to regular five-day work as mandated by Gov. Aumentado

The time and days of work in the entire provincial government have officially returned to the regular system, after Governor Erico Aristotle C. Aumentado issued Executive Order No. 24 s. 2026, which orders the return to a five-day work week, Monday to Friday, starting on June 1, 2026.

This move is the official removal of the implemented four-day work week, which was previously adopted as a response to the high prices of crude oil and energy worldwide at that time due to wars in the Middle East.

Under that system, service days were shortened to save on fuel and electricity costs.

But according to the order, because the situation in the world has changed—where the conflict has already stopped and the prices of oil and energy have gone down—there is no more reason to continue the previous arrangement.

The government also considers that the return to a five-day work week is best so that the needs of the public can be addressed faster, quicker, and more smoothly.

According to Gov. Aris Aumentado, through the regular hours and days of office opening, constant service, stronger coordination among different departments, and faster handling of transactions and projects for the people of Bohol can be ensured.

The order states that all circulars, memoranda, and previous orders that are contrary or different from this are canceled and have no more force.

All employees and officials are reminded to now follow the regular hours set by the Civil Service Commission.

This action is being implemented to ensure that the Capitol is always ready to provide accurate, efficient, and uninterrupted public service to all Boholanos.

Despite the fatigue in preparing and holding the event, the mayor said everything was worth it because of the happiness and unity shown by the people during the concert.

Two vehicles crash in Baclayon

Two vehicles crashed recently in a head-on collision at 2:00 p.m. on the National Highway in Brgy Santa Cruz Baclayon.

Both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions.

The KIA RIO driven by Amares Duce, 32 years old from Calceta Tagbilaran, was from Tagbilaran going to Baclayon while the TOYOTA INNOVA driven by Eugenio Sevalda, 62 years old from Lumanoy Lila, was heading toward Tagbilaran.

According to the investigation by PNP Baclayon in an interview with Tinuod nga Radyo, the Kia RIO driven by Duce already crossed the lane because he fell asleep.

This caused it to hit the oncoming Innova.

Both drivers were injured and Duce was brought to Ace Hospital because he had difficulty breathing.

There is still no settlement between both parties regarding the incident.

Bill for therapy centers for children with special needs approved at committee level

House Bill No. 8727 filed by Bohol 2nd District Representative Maria Vanessa “Vanvan” Cadorna-Aumentado has been approved at the committee level in the House of Representatives.

The law aims to establish comprehensive therapy and support centers for children with “special needs” or health and mental disabilities, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Under this bill, the construction of such facilities in every province and in every “highly urbanized city” across the country is mandated to ensure they have enough funds for their operation.

The move is considered a big honor and victory for families who have members needing special attention, care, and medical attention but lack financial capacity.

Based on the official purpose and standards of the legislature from the House of Representatives of the Philippines, this bill was made to address the following important needs such as:

Free and easy access to therapy.

Many families cannot afford private therapy like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy because of the high cost.

By establishing this in every province and city, government service can be brought closer and made free or affordable.

Second, early diagnosis.

The centers will serve as places where parents can have their children checked while they are still young so they can be helped immediately if signs of ASD, ADHD, and other developmental delays are found.

Third, support groups.

The center will not only help the children but will also provide free training, education, and counseling for parents and caregivers on how to properly take care of children with special needs.

To ensure the project lasts and can be used, it has “appropriating funds” which means the national government will really allocate annual funds for the salaries of experts like developmental pediatricians and therapists and for maintaining the facility.

He emphasized that getting information directly from the official source of government greatly helps in easily avoiding the spread of “fake news” or wrong teachings that can create chaos in the community.

Former drug case suspect jailed again after being caught selling over P500k worth of shabu in Panglao

A former arrestee is back in jail after he was caught again in an anti-illegal drug buy-bust operation where over half a million pesos worth of suspected shabu was seized in Barangay Lourdes, Panglao early morning Wednesday, June 3.

The Panglao Drug Enforcement Unit identified the suspect as Joaquin Capayas, 45 years old, married, and a resident of Sitio Candait, Barangay Dampas, Tagbilaran City.

In the operation led by Police Chief Master Sergeant Michael Armildez under the supervision of Police Major John Almarino Boñior, a poseur buyer succeeded in buying one packet of suspected shabu from the suspect worth ₱15,000.

After the transaction, authorities immediately arrested the suspect where five more packets of the same prohibited drug were recovered from him.

Based on research by a media outlet,  and official police records, it was learned that this is not the first time Capayas was involved in illegal drugs.

On October 11, 2018, he was also arrested by intelligence operatives of the Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB) on Tamblot Street, Barangay Cogon, Tagbilaran City.

At that time, Capayas, who was only 37 years old, was considered a high-value target on the provincial drug watch list and was caught with an estimated ₱330,000 worth of shabu.

In the latest operation in Panglao, all the confiscated drugs from the suspect had a total estimated weight of 79.84 grams worth ₱542,912 based on the standard drug price.

For now, the suspect is temporarily detained and will again face charges for violation of Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 for illegal sale and possession of prohibited drugs.

According to the post of Jibby Josol, the truck, which was loaded with glass products, suddenly hit a vehicle and left the place without stopping to face the damage it caused.

Aside from the damage to the vehicle, the passengers also experienced great trauma and fear, especially since a minor girl and a one-year-old grandchild of Josol were inside.

Even though the family is grateful that the victims did not suffer serious injuries or physical harm, the sudden impact and what he described as the irresponsible action of the driver still had a big effect.

Because of this, the Josol family is formally appealing to Mayor Jane Yap and the concerned authorities of Tagbilaran City to help them check and review the CCTV cameras located near the place of the incident to quickly identify the plate number and the driver of the truck.

They are also asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that can help move justice forward to send them a message immediately.

Governor Aumentado proposes orthopedic doctors for district hospitals

Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado proposed to the Department of Health (DOH) to place orthopedic doctors in the province’s big district hospitals so road accident patients can be treated closer to home.

According to the governor, the move will help reduce the continuous influx of patients to Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Medical Center, which is one of the causes of congestion and overcrowding of patients in that hospital.

He said many cases in Bohol involving road accidents are admitted to Gallares due to the lack of specialists in Bohol’s district hospitals.

Aumentado explained that many road accident victims need special orthopedic care, so it would be better to have specialists in district hospitals so not all cases have to be brought to Gallares Hospital.

Aumentado also informed a DOH official about the condition of Gallares hospital.

Because of this, the governor tasked Provincial Health Officer Dr. Em-em Uy to write to the DOH to ask for support and help in deploying orthopedic doctors to Bohol’s district hospitals.

It is expected that through this, medical service in the province’s hospitals will expand and the condition of Gallares Hospital will ease while care for accident victims will also be faster.
