Student leaders in Tagbilaran develop plans to communicate climate risks
Tagbilaran City is putting youth voices at the center of climate action after convening student leaders from six colleges and universities for a two-day workshop.
Held on June 16-17, 2026 at Alta Bohol Resort and Convention Center in Baclayon, the Youth Workshop on Climate Risk Communication Plan Development focused on turning local climate data into community-friendly messages.
Students and faculty advisers worked together to map vulnerabilities across Tagbilaran’s 15 barangays and draft campaigns that speak directly to residents’ needs.
The City Mayor’s Office Strategic Communications, City Youth Development Office, City Environmental Management Office, and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office organized the event, with backing from Catholic Relief Services, Australian Aid, and Caritas International.
Participants reviewed climate risk data and current city efforts on environmental protection and disaster readiness to ground their plans in real local conditions.
Organizers said the workshop empowers young people to create communication strategies and IEC materials that make climate information clearer and more actionable for neighborhoods.
In her message, Mayor Jane Yap stressed that community resilience depends on everyone, especially the youth.
“Climate change is a shared challenge, and our students bring fresh ideas for sharing information, mobilizing people, and pushing solutions that keep our communities safer,” Yap said.
The program reflects Tagbilaran City’s broader push to strengthen climate resilience by linking government offices, schools, development partners, and local stakeholders.

DOH and Tagbilaran City equip 60 responders with life-saving skills
Tagbilaran City just added 60 more people to its frontline emergency team after DOH Central Visayas and the local government wrapped up training this June.
From June 15-16, participants learned Basic Life Support, then shifted to Standard First Aid from June 17-19, 2026.
The group included DRRM-H members from the city’s primary care facility, selected Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and CDRRMO personnel who respond first when crises hit.
DOH CVCHD’s Health Emergency Management Bureau led hands-on sessions mixing lectures, simulations, and real-life drills for emergency care and first aid.
Dr. Jeia Pondoc, City Health Officer, said the training directly upgrades the skills people rely on when every second counts.
“This is vital because it prepares our residents to act fast and take a stronger role when disasters strike,” Pondoc said.
Mayor Jane Yap pointed out that investing in training means more lives protected during accidents, calamities, or health emergencies.
“Barangay volunteers, health workers, and disaster responders are always first on site.
When we equip them well, we make sure help arrives quickly and communities feel safer,” Yap said.
With this batch trained, Tagbilaran strengthens its network of ready responders who can deliver immediate aid and keep disaster response coordinated.
