What is PRP?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a preparation made from a person’s own blood.
A small amount of blood is collected and processed to concentrate the platelets and other components of plasma. The resulting PRP is then applied or injected into the area being treated.
Platelets are best known for helping blood clot, but they also contain numerous growth factors and signaling molecules involved in tissue repair.
PRP may therefore provide the injured area with a concentrated source of the body’s own repair signals.
A simple analogy
Think of tissue repair as a construction project:
- Stem cells may provide cells and powerful biological signals that influence the repair environment.
- PRP provides a concentrated package of growth factors and signaling molecules.
- The patient’s own tissues provide the construction site and much of the machinery required for healing.
The goal is to create a more favorable environment for repair.
