Early last week, President Marcos Jr. signed the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) registration act and for some this is a welcome solution to a high-tech problem.
It is no secret that the Philippines is the texting capital of the world, making good news of the short messaging system (SMS) as a means to cheaply send information almost instantly across the nation.
It is said that over 23 million text messages are being sent by Filipinos every day and the unlimited texting promos of telcos made the texting craze larger than before.
However, unscrupulous people are using text messages to send false information and even use these into scams.
In recent times, people would receive text messages about scams saying they have won something or they are eligible for employment. Of course, these are scams but the unfortunate thing is that a lot of people fall for these scams.
The SIM registration will help solve a new problem which has been non-existent 40 or 30 years ago.
The SIM registration means that we have the ability to identify the owner of a certain cellphone number. This means that we can go after the person who owns the number being used in scams or in the spreading of false information.
We have the power to go after those who are using SIM cards for nefarious activities.
So is this the end of scams and trolls using SIM cards?
