What is MDR-TB?
(Part 6)
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): We are still in the diet of an MDR-TB patient, Dr. Bryan. What should not be included in the diet of a person who has TB?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: A TB patient has to limit refined products. Examples of these are sugar, white bread, and white rice.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): What else Dr. Bryan?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: The patient has to avoid also high-fat, high-cholesterol red meat. He should have leaner protein sources like poultry, beans, tofu, and fish.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): By the way, is fasting good for a TB patient?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: TB patients may have fasting. There is no problem with that. However, it is advised that TB patients during fasting, should increase their immunity by consuming foods high in calories and high in protein.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): How about ice cream? Is this good for a TB patient?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: A TB patient has to follow nutritional tips which could help reduce risks and symptoms. So one tip says that the patient has to avoid all suspected food allergens, including dairy (milk, cheese, eggs, and ice cream), wheat (gluten), soy, corn, preservatives, and chemical food additives.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): I understand. Does TB have a permanent cure?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the lungs. It can be completely cured with the right treatment.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): And what is the right treatment?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: By right treatment, I mean the right medication for the illness. And I would again suggest that the patient has to consult his doctor for the right treatment. (TO BE CONTINUED)
