Bronchitis

For the past few days, i saw an increase of children
coming in to the clinic for cough, colds and fever.
So, let us revisit what bronchitis is all about.
Bronchitis is an acute inflammatory disease of the
large airways that include the trachea, the large and
medium sized bronchi.
Bronchitis accounts for approximately 40% of acute
respiratory infection consultations in children.
This results from an extension of an acute upper
respiratory infection.
Bronchitis is characterized by:

  • dry cough
  • rhonchi and
  • harsh breath sounds

Initially, the cough is dry but may produce sputum as
the disease progresses.
There is an associated fever which could be low
grade or high grade.
The child upon examination may have pharyngeal
erythema
So as a clinician, I highly recommend that once our
children are sick, let them stay at home.
They should avoid going to school and to crowded
places.
They should see their doctors and take the
medications prescribed for them.
They should sleep well and eat nutritious foods.
