In a bid to fortify community engagement and sustainable practices, the City Government of Tagbilaran officially unveiled the “City Agrivet Membership Program,” an Agrivet Dispersal initiative, on February 26, 2024, in Barangay Taloto.
Spearheaded by the City Agriculture and Veterinary Office (CAVO), under the guidance of Dr. Genette Mae Egos-Yap, the program encompasses four sub-projects aimed at fostering agricultural and veterinary practices within the community.
The four sub-projects under the program include “Balik Bakuran” backyard gardening, “Yakap-aking Alaga Program” pet vaccination, “Babahagiang-karne program” chicken dispersal, and “Yamang-dagat Alagaan Program” seaweed production.
Mayor Jane Yap, a strong advocate for community empowerment, led the launching ceremony and delivered a keynote message highlighting the program’s significance in promoting self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship.
Mayor Yap expressed, “This program is not just about providing resources; it’s about equipping Tagbilaranons with the tools and knowledge to become self-reliant. By investing in agriculture and veterinary practices, we are nurturing a sustainable future for Tagbilaran—one where our residents thrive and our environment flourishes.”
This ongoing initiative is structured across four cycles, each targeting specific beneficiaries. The first cycle focuses on households with malnourished residents identified by the Barangay Nutrition Committee. Subsequent cycles will benefit the youth sector, urban poor families, and indigent residents.
Under the program, 30 beneficiaries per cycle will receive assorted seedlings and seeds, live hardened chickens, feeds, and starter kits. Additionally, participants will benefit from free anti-rabies vaccines, deworming, vitamins, and pet checkups. Ten out of the 30 beneficiaries in each cycle will also receive seaweed samplings or fishery starter kits, contributing to sustainable marine practices.
Chief of Staff John Geesnell “Baba” Yap II; City Administrator Cathelyn Torremocha; Hon. Odysseus Glovasa, Chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) Committee on Agriculture, Food, Fisheries Resources, Livelihood, and Cooperatives; and the Barangay Council of Taloto, led by Punong Barangay Francis Eugene Zamora, were also present during the launch.
The program is set to roll out in the 15 barangays of Tagbilaran, with upcoming schedules in Barangays Tiptip and Ubujan on February 27, 2024, and Barangay Manga on February 29, 2024.
