Sustainable growth and development require peace and security.
This was on top of the agenda as Cong. Edgar Chatto met with Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Director PBGen Redrico Atienza Maranan met at the Chatto’s residence in Tagbilaran City on February 10.
The courtesy call was ahead of the Provincial Day of Peace, an annual observance on February 11, institutionalized through Provincial Board Resolution 2014-055 approved when Chatto was then governor.
The observance commemorates the province’s insurgency-free status, as declared by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
This had been sustained throughout Chatto’s leadership through the Countryside Development Program – Purok Power Movement, a holistic peace program adopted by the AFP as a successful campaign against insurgency.
Among concerns on peace and order including, criminality and drug abuse, Chatto and Maranan are one in pushing stronger border control at ports of entry.
This can be done through the conduct of unscheduled cargo inspection with canine dogs to prevent transport of illegal substances.
Chatto had been named among top ten outstanding governors recognized by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) for their relentless efforts in waging war against illegal drugs in respective provinces.
The province in 2016 went on to implement the Community Based Drug Rehabilitation Program Without Walls (CBRP-WoW).
This complemented Chatto’s move as then vice governor to create the Barangay, Municipal, City and Provincial Anti Drug Abuse Councils, a framework that also provided for the establishment of the now award winning Center for Drug Education and Counseling (CEDEC).
This comprehensive anti-drug program had also earned an exemplary performance award by the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
In Chatto’s current capacity, he supported the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency with the construction of a new office in addition to supplement police efforts to combat criminality and illegal drugs.
Also present during the courtesy visit were PNP Provincial Director PCol Arnel Banzon and Cong. Chatto’s Chief of Staff Atty. Abel Damalerio.
